Overview

Laos is the undiscovered jewel at the heart of what was once French Indochina and is one of the most authentic travel destinations, with the UNESCO protected Luang Prabang one of the world’s most charming cities. Only now emerging after years of isolation, it is a country of stunning natural beauty, friendly people, colonial heritage and a way of life whose charms and relaxed pace are impossible to resist. Laos is an enchanting & distinctive destination that’s carpeted in luminous jungle and dotted with crumbling colonial towns and hill-tribe villages. We believe that the Mekong, mountains and forest give Laos a great natural beauty that when combined with its French colonial heritage, Buddhist culture, and relaxed pace of life makes this arguably the most appealing country of south-east Asia. Laos moves at a slow pace so tourism and development is very much in its infancy; this has helped preserve the most pristine landscapes, ancient temples and authentic villages ripe for exploring. Laos is undiluted by tourism and one that is rich in culture and the most glorious jungle-clad mountainous scenery. For many its old fashioned charm and mighty Mekong river make it the highlight of Indochina. Despite a tiny population, the country is hugely diverse with half of the population living in small hill-tribe villages. These are at their best in the undulating hills of Northern Laos; its here you’ll find some of Southeast Asia’s most untouched communities colourfully adorned in their unique dress and this area offers some of the best trekking opportunities in Indochina. A little further south is Luang Prabang, once the ancient capital of Northern Laos. This UNESCO site is Laos’ undisputed highlight that has a tranquil, spiritual vibe and is brimming with majestically gilded temples, colonial architecture, colourful markets and monks wrapped in deep saffron robes. Along the quiet walkways you’ll find chic French cafes, quirky boutiques, and within a short drive there’s elephant experiences and cascading emerald waterfalls. Travelling further south the landscape becomes flatter but no less beautiful. Here you’ll find Vat Phou Temple, the rare Irrawaddy dolphin, the Bolaven Plateau and sleepy island life. From here you can go on an incredible elephant trek escorted by mahouts: rustle through the heart of untouched jungles, skirt the Nam Khan River and encounter some astonishing wildlife. The capital city of Vientiane has managed to retain a little of its colonial charm, and it’s worth spending a day visiting temples, exploring little shops and cafes, and having dinner outdoors at the bustling night market along the river. Laos really is one of the most bewildering, diverse and welcoming destinations we know of and now is the time to go.
