Clouds lies in Nkuringo village on the south-western side of Bwindi Impenetrable rainforest, a three-hour journey by plane and 4X4 from Entebbe. The trailhead for tracking the Nkuringo gorilla family starts almost on the doorstep, with six groups accessible in Rushaga, a 45-minute drive away. For an in-depth understanding of the behaviour and conservation of gorillas, guests can be accompanied by a veterinary doctor from the Gorillas Doctors or by a researcher from the Conservation Through Public Health (CTPH) organisation in Buhoma. Gorillas Doctors are dedicated to conserving wild mountain and eastern lowland gorillas through life-saving veterinary medicine and a One Health approach.
This exclusive experience allows a total group of 8 guests to track a gorilla group in the forest on their own. This enables guests to have a deeper connection with these fascinating animals, accompanied by their own guide who can give them personal briefing.
Guests are invited to sample the fine teas at the end of the tour whilst looking out over the impressive forest.
Bwindi Community Hospital was established in 2003 to provide health care to the Batwa community and, due to the high demand of health services, the hospital opened its services to all people living in the area. What started as an outreach clinic under a tree is now a 112 bed hospital providing health care and educational services to a population of over 100,000 people. A simple stroll through the village will lead you to the hospital.

Remote, beautiful, intimate; and at 2,000 metres above sea level, it is Uganda’s highest lodge. Picture this: You are sitting up on a ridge, above the clouds, looking across to the Virunga volcanoes. Behind you is the primordial, mysterious and impenetrable forest that is Bwindi. As you sit there, drinking your chilled wine, you smile. You smile because you know that your personal butler is lighting the fire in your cottage and setting out your freshly laundered clothes. In the kitchen a gorgeous meal is being prepared, and tomorrow after breakfast you will walk from the lodge to the Nkuringo trailhead and track the gorillas. Guests at Clouds stay in their own cottage – there are 5 double cottages and 2 family cottages. Built of local volcanic stone, every cottage has a large sitting room with fireplace, vast armchairs, hand-woven carpets and artwork from Uganda’s best artists.
The lodge is situated within easy walking distance of the trail where guests can begin their gorilla trekking adventure. Tracking gorillas is a highlight, but you can also immerse yourself in the relaxed vibe of the lodge, partake in community activities, indulge in massages and just enjoy the rarity of being pampered in such a spectacular setting. The main lodge feels like a ski chalet – soaring ceilings, massive exposed wooden beams, big picture windows with endless views of treetops, volcanoes and mountains. Activities at Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge include gorilla trekking, forest walks, bird watching and cultural visits. The local community is an important stakeholder in both the lodge and the forest, and leads the way in making the tracking the Nkuringa gorillas an enriching experience.
