Once an economic and cultural capital in Morocco, the Marrakech Medina is listed by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) as a World Heritage Site. Today, the smell of freshly-baked bread pervades the air; the market stalls brim and the snake-charmers charm. Take a half-day guided walking tour to fully experience this Morocco ‘must do’.
Hosting both modern and traditional art exhibitions, the Musée de Marrakech makes for mind-expanding musings. Housed in the beautifully converted Dar Menebhi Palace, the Marrakech museum building itself is a fine example of authentic Moroccan architecture with original mosaics, floor-set basins and beautiful carvings. Historical artifacts such as coins, books and pottery from the Berber, Moroccan Jewish and Islamic cultures are fascinating viewing; as is the large central atrium with its statement chandelier piece.
Upon hearing it was to become a hotel, fashion designer, Yves Saint Laurent, and his partner, Pierre Berge, bought the Jardin Majorelle, an electric-blue villa and 2.5 acre botanical garden, to preserve the vision of original owner, painter, Jacques Majorelle, who dedicated forty years of his life to the garden’s cultivation. Open to the public, the onetime painter’s studio is now home to the personal Berber collection of Saint Laurent and Bergé and is one of the most visited sites in Marrakech – not to be missed!
When Parisian, Patrick Menac’h, and Marrakeshi, Hamid Mergani, realised they were both collecting vintage Moroccan photography they decided to open a gallery together, to showcase their collections. With over 4500 photos, 2000 glass negatives and 80 documents dating from 1870 to 1950, the Marrakech photography museum is a historian’s dream. Select works fill three floors, organised by region and theme, and include a rare, full-colour 1957 documentary, shot in Morocco. Most works are editioned prints from original negatives and are available for sale.

Built in the 19th century, the Palais de la Bahia (meaning ‘place of the beautiful’ or ‘brilliance’) incorporates eight hectares of gardens, mosque, Koranic school, harem, hammam, stables, courtyards and the first stained glass windows of the Maghreb. An absolute masterpiece of Moroccan architecture and the largest and most luxurious Moroccan palace of its time, its rich history tells tales of sultans, artisans and concubines. Today as well as being a favourite Marrakech historical site it is also a venue for Arab-Andalusian music concerts and art exhibitions.
