In collaboration with the Born Free Foundation, the Big Cat Rescue and Education Centres are situated within our game reserve. They aim to draw attention to the plight of wild cats, confined in impoverished, captive environments throughout the world. The Born Free Foundation is a UK based wildlife charity organisation that rescues animals from captivity and gives them lifetime care in spacious sanctuaries. The charity protects threatened species including lions, elephants, tigers, gorillas, wolves, bears, marine turtles and much more in their natural habitat. Working with local communities Born Free finds humane solutions to help people and wildlife live together without conflict.

This is a stunning gorge setting, surrounded by temperate forest vegetation & looking out onto imposing mountain cliffs & riverbed below. We think that Shamwari Eagles Crag offers the most luxurious accommodation at Shamwari. Nine luxurious glass and thatch suites all have expansive views of the surrounding gorge. They have been designed so that your privacy is assured even whilst wall to wall glass doors on two sides allow you to open up the suite to the sights and sounds of the bush. Outside is your own private wooden deck. Complete with private plunge pool with views over the densely vegetated kloof where eagles soar.
The main lodge at Shamwari Eagles Crag is stylish and luxurious with plenty of quiet spots to relax. Enjoy a sumptuous meal in the dining room before retiring to the gracious lounge for a quiet drink and a chat with fellow guests. Outside there’s a boma for alfresco dining under the stars around the fire. Other facilities include a library, cigar lounge with fireplace & big screen TV with glass fold-away walls opening out onto the deck. Shamwari was the original malaria-free game reserve in the Eastern Cape and remains at the forefront of conservation in the area. One of Shamwari’s strengths is that it lies at the convergence of five ecosystems. And this diversity supports the Big Five as well as varied antelope and a rich bird life. This beautiful 20,000ha malaria-free reserve is situated in the verdant bush along the Bushmans River. Luxury rooms are offered at six lodges on the reserve, quite diverse in their appearance.
Nine suites are available, and can convert between twin and king beds. Each has a private heated plunge pool and deck, en-suite bathroom with indoor and outdoor shower as well as mod cons such as hair-dryer, airconditioning, safe and tea and coffee making facilities.
Junior Suite
Eagles Crag Lodge has nine stylish en suite rooms, all of which have been named after a different kind of eagle found in the reserve. Each of the rooms has been built to maximize privacy, and offers a tranquil setting.All of the suites feature king-sized beds that can be converted into twins. All the suites have air conditioning, en suite bathrooms, indoor and outdoor showers, and heated private plunge pools on the decks.
Eagles Crag Lodge has a variety of dining venues where you can enjoy exceptional local and international cuisine. The upper floor dining room has an expansive deck and stunning views of the cliffs; you can also dine beneath the stars around the boma’s roaring fire.
Restaurant
The architects have designed a spacious entrance and reception looking directly onto the lush vegetation and majestic rocky cliff face. On the upper level, the Guest dining and lounge open through large doorways onto the wrap-around veranda with individual ‘dining pods’ overlooking the cliff. On the lower level, fitness enthusiasts Guests can enjoy a fitness centre and an entertainment lounge.
Eagles Crag – Lounge & Bar
Nine luxurious Guest Villas, each with its own sundeck and heated plunge pool, are discreetly placed in the surrounding bush and the intimate Spa complements the Lodge offerings. Eagles Crag will close from 1 May to 1 September 2018.
Spend cosy evenings in front of a crackling fireplace in either the main lodge’s upstairs lounge or in the lower-level lounge.Relax and rejuvenate your senses in the lodge’s Retreat, with its two therapy rooms, hydro-bath, steam room and sauna.
