La Bamba de Areco Horse Riding

Estancia La Bamba is ideally located only 120km from Buenos Aires and close to San Antonio de Areco in the heart of the Pampas. La Bamba is one of the most upscale colonial estancias near Buenos Aires and is steeped in history and tradition. Recently renovated with great care as a Relais & Chateaux boutique hotel, Estancia La Bamba successfully combines luxurious comfort and colonial elegance. Offering guests the feeling of being welcomed into a private home, Estancia la Bamba is steeped in history and tradition which makes this hotel a special and timeless place, and perfect for a spot of relaxation.

The striking dark red and white colonial style building hosts dark wood antique furniture and artwork throughout, as well as authentic horseback riding accoutrements to complete the look. The estancia also has a watchtower, covered porches, a charming internal courtyard and beautifully kept lawns ready for a stroll or a whack at croquet. The horses are perfect for beginners, giving everyone the chance to get a feel for the traditional Gaucho lifestyle. In the setting of the pastoral fields you can explore on foot, by bike or horse and during polo season the estancia’s polo team practices and plays games on site for your viewing pleasure.

With two airy and sleek rooms in the main house; the Colonial Suite (two rooms perfect for groups of friends and families); six charming boltholes dotted around the courtyard; and one totally private secluded cottage there are plenty of unique options for bedding down in countryside style. All rooms have lavishly polished dark-wood floors and look out over patios and polo fields, pampa or park – fling open your windows and listen to the birdsong. Each bedroom is unique and all are lovingly filled with exquisite antique pieces, silver candlesticks and grand tomes on Argentina. The bathrooms channel a classical French vibe with white porcelain sinks and chequered floor tiles, and all are spacious with delightful in-house smellies.

Every mealtime is taken seated in a different part of the estancia – all are noteworthy but lunches really stand out. An impressive traditional asado is a languid and elegantly bucolic affair of never ending cuts of meats and salads served around a large table in a purpose built quincho. With pre-lunch empanadas, a pretty high-tea and then a hosted dinner in the handsome dining room, do come prepared – by this I mean hungry, and with some choice anecdotes up your sleeve as all meals are communal. A beautiful continental breakfast is served in the original and magnificently renovated gaucho pulperia with eggs cooked as you wish, excellent coffee and great pastries.

La Bamba de Areco Dining
La Bamba de Areco Dining

Dining

The dining room feels very much more like your Argentine millionaire friend’s home than a hotel. Guests eat together at the antique dining table (or privately elsewhere on the estate if you prefer) and the traditional asado, or barbecue, is at the heart of your estancia experience: expect elaborate lunches of salads sweetbreads, chorizos, and various cuts of beef grilled to perfection. All meals are included in your room rate, so dig in.

La Bamba de Areco Wine

Wine Cellar

There’s no bar as such, but wine is served with every meal (and included in your room rate) and cocktails are available pre dinner and on request. And between meals, feel free to pour yourself a little something (although there’ll usually be an eager staffer standing by to aid you).

Take a dip in the outdoor pool, surrounded by loungers and shaded by umbrellas and 100-year-old trees – the unheated water’s refreshing in the hot Argentine sun. Book in advance for your hot stone massages, facials and beauty treats in the hotel’s small treatment room.
