The food and wine are real highlights. Fresh native produce (from foraged samphire to free-range local lamb) is the order of the day on a menu that changes depending on what is in season. They are accompanied by an impressive selection of wines focused on South Australia’s great regions – Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Adelaide Hills and Coonawarra. All meals are served in the Great Room where a suspended fireplace acts as the centrepiece, or al fresco, although for real privacy there is a wine cellar dining experience available. Dining at Southern Ocean Lodge is both a dynamic delight for the senses and a true gastronomic journey of Kangaroo Island; the ‘produce to plate’ approach is a real passion for Executive Chef Asher Blackford and his team.

Dinner is a decadently refined menu, showcasing the riches of the Southern Ocean and the premium produce of Kangaroo Island and the broader state of South Australia. Artisan producers of sustainably produced ingredients are honoured in each menu, creating a unique experience of South Australian dining. After a morning filled with walks and wildlife, or simply spent relaxing with a book or with a treatment in the spa, appetites are up for lunch. The young staff are knowledgeable, attentive and have a can-do attitude that seems typical of the island. The first-name-terms style service does not seem contrived, as it does in some hotels. You may be alarmed by the lack of a pool, but it is in keeping with the lodge’s commitment to minimising its carbon footprint. Plunge pools, a spa and an impressive wine cellar tick the boxes whether you’re looking for work, rest or play.
