The food and wine are real highlights. Fresh native produce (from foraged samphire to free-range local lamb) is the order of the day on a menu that changes depending on what is in season. They are accompanied by an impressive selection of wines focused on South Australia’s great regions – Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Adelaide Hills and Coonawarra. All meals are served in the Great Room where a suspended fireplace acts as the centrepiece, or al fresco, although for real privacy there is a wine cellar dining experience available. Dining at Southern Ocean Lodge is both a dynamic delight for the senses and a true gastronomic journey of Kangaroo Island; the ‘produce to plate’ approach is a real passion for Executive Chef Asher Blackford and his team.

Celebrated as Australia’s culinary capital, the rich soils and pure rains of South Australia inspire artisan growers to produce a bounty of premium, fresh and often organic food and wines. The daily changing menu honours these fine local ingredients with a cuisine style at once sophisticated and simple to promote the intense purity of flavours and to create a very special dining experience, unique to the Island and to Southern Ocean Lodge. An excellent range of diverse Kangaroo Island and South Australian wines and beers has been hand selected to comprise the beverage menu.

Southern Ocean Lodge Dining
Southern Ocean Lodge Restaurant

Dining

Dinner is a decadently refined menu, showcasing the riches of the Southern Ocean and the premium produce of Kangaroo Island and the broader state of South Australia. The daily changing menu may be a four course selection with choice, so as guests create their own epicurean adventure at each meal, or the chef’s tasting menu, a carefully crafted degustation combining the freshest seasonal flavours and leading guests on a gastronomic charter of the region’s finest local produce. Artisan producers of sustainably produced ingredients are honoured in each menu, creating a unique experience of South Australian dining. After a morning filled with walks and wildlife, or simply spent relaxing with a book or with a treatment in the spa, appetites are up for lunch. The three course menu offers a selection of seasonal treats and is deceptively light, a perfectly planned ‘elegant sufficiency’.

Southern Ocean Lodge Bar

Bar

All beverages, both alcoholic and non alcoholic are included in the rates at Southern Ocean Lodge and a select cellarmasters list of vintage SA wines and French Champagnes is additional. In keeping with the Lodge commitment to featuring local produce an excellent range of diverse Kangaroo Island and South Australian wines and beers has been hand selected to comprise the beverage menu. The Lodge is designed to encourage a relaxed ‘holiday house’ feel. Guests may help themselves to a drink from their in-suite bar, or from the bar in the Great Room to relax and enjoy with the view, a book or perhaps share with a mate.

The young staff are knowledgeable, attentive and have a can-do attitude that seems typical of the island. The first-name-terms style service does not seem contrived, as it does in some hotels. You may be alarmed by the lack of a pool, but it is in keeping with the lodge’s commitment to minimising its carbon footprint. Plunge pools, a spa and an impressive wine cellar tick the boxes whether you’re looking for work, rest or play.

Southern Ocean Lodge Pool

Pool
