Moon Valley

Just five 5 kilometers from La Paz, “el Valle de la Luna” (the Valley of the Moon) features breathtaking, oddly shaped rocky formations that give visitors the sense of being on another planet or the moon. This is the perfect place for hiking or bicycling.



Lake Titicaca

Situated about 3,800 meters above sea level, Lake Titicaca is a beautiful, sacred lake that lies on the border between Peru and Bolivia. It has 36 islands, the most important of which are the Sun and the Moon, the cradle of the Incan empire, and the temple of the “Virgins of the Sun” respectively.



Copacabana

In Copacabana, a town located near Lake Titicaca, you will find the important Sanctuary of the Virgen Morena and the Astronomical Observatory. The Intikala, or Tribunal del Inca, is 200 meters outside the city and the Inca Bath, or Kusijata, two kilometers from the city.



Tiwanaku

Located on the southern shore of Lake Titicaca, the city of Tiwanaku (also spelled Tiahuanaco) was the capital of a powerful pre-Inca civilization that dominated the Andean region between 500 and 900 AD. The ruins of this ancient culture include temples, a pyramid, symbolic gates, monoliths and mysterious carvings of alien-like faces.


Yungas

With habitats ranging from montane forest and cloud forest to lowland forest, this region features green slopes, cliffs, rivers, waterfalls and moderate vegetation and the towns of Chulumani and Coroico.



Salar de Uyuni

With an area of about 12,000 km, the Salar de Uyuni is the world’s largest salt flat, covering almost entirely the province of Daniel Campos.

Calacoto is in the upmarket Zona Sur of La Paz, a quieter part of the city. From here it’s around a 30-minute drive to the main tourist centre, where you can find attractions such as the intriguing witches market, where stalls are overflowing with unusual trinkets, talismans and natural remedies for a whole array of ailments.The hotel itself is simple and functional, with all the facilities you would expect from a city hotel, including a restaurant and bar area, as well as a fitness centre which comes complete with a massage treatment room, a Jacuzzi and saunas. The 35 rooms and suites offer comfortable accommodation and contemporary decor, and all are spacious.

There are 65 rooms, which are decorated sparsely, with dark hardwood floods, very low-key colours and little in the way of local art or the usual Andean textiles. Sizes range from a small-ish executive king, with LED TV, desk, iPod dock, minibar and pillow menu, to a 148-square-metre presidential suite with two bathrooms, living room, dining room, whirlpool bath and its own terrace.

An ample buffet breakfast is served in the Yerba Buena restaurant, which also serves innovative Mediterranean-Asian dishes, with a good range of fish and seafood options. The interior is lovely, especially at night, with dimly lit Incaic statues in alcoves. There’s also a terrace. Casabar on the eighth (top) floor is a sleek cocktail lounge with great views of the city and surrounding mountains, and there’s a family-friendly ice-cream parlour-cum-café on the ground floor.
