Families have endless options to enjoy as they explore the Atacama – sand boarding, mountain biking and learning about the wildlife. The Northern Hemisphere summer months are the best time to visit, so this fits in perfectly with school holidays.
The pristine skies of Atacama Desert are a stargazer’s paradise. The altitude and bone-dry atmosphere make them incredibly clear, and you can see the planets, stars and galaxies up close with philosopher-cum-astronomer Alain Maury.
Head into the Atacama Desert to visit the atmospheric village of Toconao, before continuing to the great Salar de Atacama, a huge saltpan where flamingos and many bird species feed against a majestic backdrop of the high Andes.

Awasi’s chef Juan Pablo Mardones would be handier than a backpack of flares in a desert-expedition entourage: as you hack away at a cacti for a dribble of water, he’d be grinding humita to make fresh tortellini, spearing sea bass and assembling a parfait with freshly plucked lúcuma fruit. He’s spent years honing his skills and his keen eye for ingredients that thrive in the world’s driest desert. A menu of beautifully plated, sophisticated fare – steak with a sweet chañar fruit sauce and a wine reduction, rica rica-laced pasta, and octopus causa (a Peruvian-style terrine) – is testament to his creativity. Breakfasts (a spread of fresh juices, pastries, breads and fruit with a selection of hot dishes) is equally tempting. Guests dine in the open-air courtyard.

The Dining
Include a private restaurant, which creates mouth-watering fusions of Altiplano and international menus, an al fresco bar area where guests can take in the spectacular night sky. You will love the unique regional flavours showcased on the restaurant’s menu. Tuck into purple potatoes, patasca (a stew made with tripe, veal, potatoes, stewed corn and peppers), quinoa, or chañar, a meaty, sweet fruit from the Chilean chañar or palo verde tree.
Awasi has an outdoor pool, spacious outdoor lounge areas warmed by open fireplaces, a library and chess tables, open air bar and restaurant serving a fusion of Chilean and international cuisine, featuring lots of regional organic produce supplied by local farming communities. There is also an outdoor grill for barbecues and an open kitchen with seating for cookery classes.

Pool
The pool is better suited to cooling dips than Olympic laps; sunk into the hotel’s stone courtyard, it’s within ordering distance of the hotel’s bar. sparkling swimming pool where many languid hours can be spent enjoying the Atacama sun.

Spa
There’s no spa on site, but therapists skilled in all manner of massages, reiki and reflexology can be summoned to your room on request.
