A riverside property housed in a former 1960s sugar mill, Alila Yangshuo makes the most of the region’s dramatic scenery, but in a less affected slice of the countryside, away from the well-worn tourist paths of Guilin. Designed by Dong Gong of Vector Architects, with interiors by award-winning Ju Bin of Horizontal Space Design, the vision for Alila Yangshuo is to integrate the new with the old, paying homage to the unique history of these heritage buildings. The main guestroom building features simple yet strong lines and a combination of local stone and bamboo in the perfect balance of hard and soft. Designed in harmony with the natural landscape, it creates the feel of exploring a karst cave and embraces nature’s mystery.
A cluster of 1960s buildings part of the original sugar mill have been restored to house a series of lofty public spaces and heritage suites with original brickwork and artfully lit timber beams. These are surrounded by a low-slung new building, which houses the rest of the rooms and villas. Here, a perforated concrete façade sheds a dappled light onto low-key neutral interiors that are dressed with a mix of contemporary furnishings – mostly by Chinese designers – such as the layered rice paper and beech wood bucket chairs by PINWU Studio. Recycled timber and stone from the original site add texture and a subtle sense of place, while water – which has been used to great effect – adds to the property’s tranquil vibe.
Rooms are mainly housed within the newly built wing; all of these have a private terrace that open up to peaceful views of the surrounding landscape (either of the garden or the river). Tactile timber, subtle concealed lighting and understated modern furnishings create a low-key atmosphere while offerings include double vanities, coffee and tea-making facilities, in-room safes and separate baths and rain showers. Higher category rooms offer extras such as complimentary laundry and afternoon tea or a separate kitchen with a microwave oven, while the Heritage suites come with your own private butler.
The individual Pool Villas, each with private pool and garden, are designed for private indulgence with alcoves for in-villa dining, spa treats and quiet evenings. For those who want to unwind in the peacefulness of nature.
