Hangzhou’s loftiest hotel is some distance from the West Lake, but it more than makes up for its removed location with a chic sky-high design, elegant rooms styled with local motifs, and impressive dining. Towering 49 floors over Qianjiang New City, an evolving business district on the westbank of Qiantang River, Park Hyatt affords sweeping views of Hangzhou and the tea-clad hillsides beyond. It rises above a luxury shopping mall, and two metro lines in the basement provide traffic-free travel to West Lake in 20 minutes and Hangzhou East High-speed Railway Station in just 15 minutes. It’s a 30-minute drive from Hangzhou International Airport.
Yabu Pushelberg’s design is a contemporary interpretation of a Ming-dynasty Chinese merchant’s mansion. A procession of courtyard ‘boxes’ marks the entrance, and a lobby layered with grey-veined marble mimics the patterns of traditional Chinese landscape paintings. Parquetry floors, hand-tufted floral carpets and lacquered screens add a soft residential touch. And, of course, the cloud-piercing rooms and public spaces offer dazzling views. Befitting Park Hyatt’s tranquil vibe, service is discreet and efficient. The knowledgeable concierge can suggest intriguing itineraries, from longjing tea picking to artisan museum visits.
