With high ceilings and light flooding in through French windows, there’s a feeling of space inside bedrooms. Silvery chandeliers hang over beds with comfortable mattresses. Aside from a statuette of La Girardilla (the symbol of Havana) and local pictures – such as one of a cigar-smoking Afro-Cuban woman in my room – there’s again not much sense of Cuba in the décor. Perhaps you don’t need it, though, when the balcony looks out onto daily life in Havana itself. The greatest difference between the rooms is whether it has a balcony, or it looks inwards into the central patio (entry-level rooms). There’s a feeling of space inside the bathrooms, too, which are surprisingly large given the central location, with a large mirror hanging over a sink that’s set in marble and a walk-in rainshower with a mosaic of more glittery tiles, with Kempinski’s own toiletries throughout.

Confluencias restaurant, where breakfast is served, has window tables looking out over Parque Central and an extensive buffet, including legs of Serrano ham, Parmesan wheels, hot dishes, pastries and bottles of champagne. Up on the top floor, there’s casual food, like pizzas, at El Surtidor Pool Terrace and Bar and a more refined, seafood-heavy menu at San Cristóbal Panoramic Restaurant, from lobster ceviche to sizeable chunks of snapper and corvina – elegantly plated and delicious, it’s a match for one of the finest views in the city. Cocktails are on the pricey side; I had better mojitos at lower prices in some of Obispo’s bars.
Confluencias
Open for breakfast with a refined buffet Kempinski is known for – an endless buffet offering the combination of different cultural breakfast traditions and variations. You can choose whether you would like to have your breakfast indoors or on the terrace, with a seating capacity for a total of 198 guests indoor and 20 on the terrace. The international restaurant has the essence of a summer pavilion using 3 different styles of furnishing, creating spaces full of intimacy and welcoming daylight similar to the atmosphere in Cuban Paladars, which have become the paradigms of Cuban gastronomy.
San Cristobal Panoramic Restaurant
This beautiful restaurant specialised in Caribbean sea food with the most spectacular views over Old Havana. The rooftop stands out, with a swimming pool and terrace bar with tables that glow pink after dusk, creating a mellow clubby vibe. The view at sunset, from El Capitolio and Parque Central across to the seafront Malecón, is hard to beat. Waiters in the restaurants tend to be helpful, friendly and fast, but on the rooftop, there’s an unwelcoming snooty attitude and hit-and-miss service for drinks. Wi-Fi is complimentary and quite fast, not something to be taken for granted in Havana.
