• This formal and very French 18th-century château is film-set ready. The fairy tale twin turrets are fit for Madame de Pompadour, as are the secret boudoirs and the general sense that the Ancien Regime has yet to be toppled. Come and lose your head over the grand salons and canopied beds.
  • Those in search of a life filled with sun, salons and stately ease will find it at Château de Fonscolombe, a restored 18th-century seat near Aix-en-Provence.
  • Owned by wealthy humanists for more than two centuries, the château finally threw open its doors in 2017 after spending 18 months under the knife, a project that saw more than 50 artisans working on its historic rooms.
  • Pale paints and bright fabrics were used to lend a modern touch, but the Chinese silk wallpaper, regal furniture and golden chandeliers ensure the house is still every inch a noble.
  • On the ground floor, the salons are as sumptuous as ever, giving guests a place to sip cocktails over backgammon, billiards or a novel by Victor Hugo.
  • In the restaurant, adept chef Nadège Serret cooks up a perfect storm of modern Provençal cuisine, best enjoyed on the shady terrace with a bottle of the estate’s own wine.

Chateau de Fonscolombe Room

After three centuries of history, the Château de Fonscolombe reopens its gate just a stone’s throw from Aix-en-Provence. Until then strictly private, this house classified as a historical monument is now a 5 * hotel. The rooms have been fashioned from noble materials: chiselled woodwork, rare and silky fabrics, marble bathrooms and wood. New space built in respect of the Castle, the Orangerie is Fonscolombe’s main restaurant. Open all year, it welcomes, depending on the season, passing customers, neighbors or residents on its sunny terraces or in its bright room of 120 seats. The park, with paths lined by majestic trees, is the fantastic oeuvre of a lineage of botanists.

After a day spent exploring the estate, limber up in the impressive hammam salon, which has a tall, arched ceiling, a wooden-fronted hammam and an elegant lounge area with a tree of life painted on the wall. As for the restaurant l’Orangerie, it too has embraced the chic, rustic and Provençal charm of the estate. Stroll through the classified parks, dive into the pools, caress the sun of Provence, enjoy a great wine on the terrace, read in the shade of cypresses, laugh with friends passing through, discover rare essences, taste the freshness of flavors of the kitchen garden, savor festive nights, recharge your batteries: so many pleasures to explore and share in Fonscolombe.

Welcome to cooing doves and canopied beds, sculpted fireplaces and soft heritage colours. Pastel wainscoting meets hand-painted floral wallpaper, subtle chandeliers and wrought-iron balconies. For romance, choose one of the château suites rather than rooms in the wings or stable block. Some of the loveliest views take in the main courtyard and dovecotes. The simplest rooms, set in the former stable block, are still in period style, complete with reclaimed Provençal tiles and timeless shutters. Many rooms have a separate walk-in shower and bath while all have separate loos. The swishest bathrooms boast rolltop tubs, as in the Queen Mother’s Suite, with its Carrara marble bath.
