Grand Hotel du Cap Ferrat Four Seasons Pool

With a guestbook signed by everyone from Elizabeth Taylor to Winston Churchill and an enviable perch overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, the palatial spread of the Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat, a Four Seasons Hotel has been the epitome of Côte d’Azur chic for more than a century. Today, sumptuous rooms with views from Nice to Monaco, Michelin-starred Provençal and Mediterranean cuisine and a lively pool club keep this landmark hotel at the forefront of Riviera life. Rent a private cabana, perfect your breast stroke in the heated, sea-water pool or simply relax in a deckchair and enjoy spectacular Mediterranean views.

Little more than a half-hour drive from Nice Côte d’Azur Airport is Cap-Ferrat’s Grand-Hôtel, perched high on this rather stunning stretch of coastline. The hotel itself is set slightly back, with seven hectares of grounds leading down to the renowned seafront pool club, Dauphin, and there is a path that winds all the way round through the town of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat to a beach named Passable. There is a surprising amount to do within walking distance (the hotel will also arrange transport by car, helicopter or yacht, although unsurprisingly this will cost you dearly); we visited the villas of Santo Sospir and Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, both as fascinating as they are beautiful.

Offering views out across the Mediterranean or over native pine groves and gardens, these elegant Guest Rooms echo the timeless chic of the French Riviera, with the option of a private terrace for lingering evenings. Ideal for leisure, business or extended stays, our luxurious Suites offer space, comfort and a private place to unwind after a day on the French Riviera, as you gaze out over inspiring views of the Mediterranean. With room for 13 people, the magnificent Villa Rose-Pierre is nestled in a one-acre private garden, with a professional fitted kitchen and wine cellar and exclusive access to its very own private freshwater pool, tennis court and petanque field.

The Mediterranean cuisine in this part of France is perhaps my favourite in the country, and what was on offer at the Grand-Hôtel did not disappoint. An emphasis on fresh fish and seafood meant everything felt sufficiently light for the hot weather when we were there, without compromising on rich flavours. Even if you’re not dining al fresco on the terrace (also an excellent spot for a pre-dinner aperitif), the Michelin-starred Restaurant du Cap (open only for dinner, from April 30 to the end of September) is at the front of the hotel, benefiting from those windows and their views. The buffet breakfast contains everything you’d expect, plus some more unusual à la carte dishes – a stand-out is the handsomely-priced scrambled eggs with truffles.
