ACTIVITIES:
Hamburg is without doubt one of the most beautiful cities in Germany: Renowned art houses and world heritage sites, glamorous shopping and outstanding restaurants, architectural scene and vibrant scene districts – and almost everything happens on or near the water.
The Elbe beach in Övelgönne is a popular destination for walks, spotting ships, jogging and BBQs. Amongst the old captains’ and ship pilots’ houses, you’ll find the mother of all beach clubs, the legendary “Strandperle Café”. The harbour museum with its many historic shipping vessels is also worth a visit. For interested parties.
The Blankenese Treppenviertel is renowned for its tiny, winding lanes, picturesque houses and endless steps, set right into the Elbe hillside. When you arrive at the top, you’ll enjoy the panoramic view over the river. Having previously been in Danish, Austrian and Prussian hands, the former village boasts a fascinating history.
Those who truly love the water will even make a home on a ship. In this way, the ‘Dockland’ office building is anchored on the shores of the river Elbe. Directly opposite, you’ll find the legendary “Fischereihafen Restaurant”. Admire the work of architects Bothe Richter Teherani over a delicious plaice prepared in traditional “Finkenwerder” style.
Surrounded by waves, the Elbphilharmonie is the ultimate concert hall in the midst of the harbour.
For more than a century, the Laeiszhalle has been at the heart of Hamburg’s classical music scene. Various city orchestras, celebrated private promoters, world-famous stars and a wealth of local choir ensembles have chosen this concert hall to celebrate music. After all, great conductors praise the building’s excellent acoustics.
Hamburg’s architecture is as diverse as its inhabitants, neighbourhoods, districts and centres. Fritz Höger’s icon of expressionism, the ‘Chilehaus,’ built 1922-1924, received Unesco World Heritage status in 2015.
Hamburg’s fish market is legendary. Since 1703, everything and anything has been sold around the more than a century old Fischauktionshalle – the old fish auction house. On Sunday mornings, from 5am, visitors can hear famous Aale-Dieter – Eel-Dieter – and his fellow market criers noisily praise their wares. Early risers and night owls straight from the lively Reeperbahn meet here for their first fish-sandwich and coffee. By 9.30am the spectacle draws to a close
The St. Pauli district is renowned for its red light area – ‘Reeperbahn’ – and the legendary football team with its skull logo. But this district, also knows as ‘Kiez’, has a lot more to offer – from art galleries and business start-ups to quirky cafés and restaurants. You’ll find authentic bars in deep cellars or at dizzying heights, with views across the port and the entire city. This district is also home of the ‘Cuneo’ – Hamburg’s iconic Italian restaurant, established in 1905.
Hamburg is the gateway to the world, especially to Scandinavia. For example, Copenhagen can be reached in around four hours by car or by direct train, or within 45 minutes by plane. Cruise ships like EUROPA 2 and Queen Elizabeth travel at a slightly more leisurely pace.
The many indoor shopping arcades in the centre of town add unique flair to every shopping experience.
The Alster hiking trail takes you straight from the hotel to the chic district of Eppendorf. Here, away from well-trodden tourist paths, you’ll discover one of the most beautiful and exclusive districts of Hamburg. Amongst exquisite boutiques, star-rated restaurants, family-run eateries and cosy cafés you’ll meet Hamburg’s locals and experience the Hanseatic lifestyle. Every Tuesday and Friday you can visit the Isemarkt, Europe’s longest open-air street market. It’s also easy to explore Eppendorf by paddle or rowing boat.
The Schanzenviertel is Hamburg’s most vibrant, alternative creative quarter – day and night. There are plenty of eclectic shops, restaurants and bars that reflect Hamburg’s progressive, liberal character. The Schanze is the epitome of individualism. Dress code? The recommends jeans and T-shirt.
Hamburg is set to become a must-visit destination for architecture and design aficionados with the historic “Speicherstadt”, the 19th-century Warehouse District, which made the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015, and the much-anticipated opening of the Herzog & de Meuron-designed Elbphilharmonie concert hall.
