The Elbe beach in Övelgönne is a popular destination for walks, spotting ships, jogging and BBQs. Amongst the old captains’ and ship pilots’ houses, you’ll find the mother of all beach clubs, the legendary “Strandperle Café”. Treppenviertel

The Blankenese Treppenviertel is renowned for its tiny, winding lanes, picturesque houses and endless steps, set right into the Elbe hillside. When you arrive at the top, you’ll enjoy the panoramic view over the river. Having previously been in Danish, Austrian and Prussian hands, the former village boasts a fascinating history.



Dockland

Those who truly love the water will even make a home on a ship. In this way, the ‘Dockland’ office building is anchored on the shores of the river Elbe. Directly opposite, you’ll find the legendary “Fischereihafen Restaurant”. Admire the work of architects Bothe Richter Teherani over a delicious plaice prepared in traditional “Finkenwerder” style.

Laeiszhalle

For more than a century, the Laeiszhalle has been at the heart of Hamburg’s classical music scene. Architecture

Hamburg’s architecture is as diverse as its inhabitants, neighbourhoods, districts and centres. Fritz Höger’s icon of expressionism, the ‘Chilehaus,’ built 1922-1924, received Unesco World Heritage status in 2015.



Fischmarkt

Hamburg’s fish market is legendary. Since 1703, everything and anything has been sold around the more than a century old Fischauktionshalle – the old fish auction house. On Sunday mornings, from 5am, visitors can hear famous Aale-Dieter – Eel-Dieter – and his fellow market criers noisily praise their wares. Early risers and night owls straight from the lively Reeperbahn meet here for their first fish-sandwich and coffee. By 9.30am the spectacle draws to a close



St. Pauli

The St. Pauli district is renowned for its red light area – ‘Reeperbahn’ – and the legendary football team with its skull logo. But this district, also knows as ‘Kiez’, has a lot more to offer – from art galleries and business start-ups to quirky cafés and restaurants. You’ll find authentic bars in deep cellars or at dizzying heights, with views across the port and the entire city. This district is also home of the ‘Cuneo’ – Hamburg’s iconic Italian restaurant, established in 1905.



In proximity to Scandinavia

Hamburg is the gateway to the world, especially to Scandinavia. For example, Copenhagen can be reached in around four hours by car or by direct train, or within 45 minutes by plane. Cruise ships like EUROPA 2 and Queen Elizabeth travel at a slightly more leisurely pace.

DINING

Parkview is a relaxed restaurant made all the breezier by its parkland location. It has a smart-casual ambiance with high ceilings and large windows as well as a pleasant summer terrace with lake views. It offers all-day dining and a two- or three-course lunch menu during the week. Traditional dishes include königsberger klopse (meatballs in a white sauce) with mashed potato and beetroot, and half a lobster with grilled vegetables. The Lakeside restaurant, on the seventh floor, is a more contemporary space that matches panoramic views across the city with upscale dishes, such as Japanese Wagyu beef, and an impressive range of wines available by the glass. The Atrium Lounge serves afternoon tea, coffee and small snacks. Breakfast, served in Parkview, is a decent spread of cereals, fresh fruits, pastries, breads, cold cuts (cheese, salmon, ham) as well as warm dishes such as eggs and pancakes.
