Lanterns have long been an important symbol of reunion in Hong Kong, as these glowing emblems are iconic to a number of cultural festivities and celebrations. Every year during the Mid-Autumn, and most notably, the Spring Lantern Festival, children and adults alike gather to set colourful lanterns aglow. Ranging from simple globes to intricate designs shaped like auspicious animals and creatures, lanterns can take a number of forms. The creations are customarily crafted from paper, silk or bamboo, and in ancient times, parents would make them for their children at the beginning of the school year to shine a bright light on their academic futures.
