Mumbai hides a wealth of culture beneath its steel-and-glass veneer. Its many museums, such as the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum, and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sanghralaya, are caretakers of a range of rare finds and notable masterpieces apart from being architectural marvels themselves.
The city, despite moving forward, has pockets that ooze quiet, old-world charm, like Horniman Circle, a huge garden surrounded by a ring of stunning architecture. The old villages, like Khotachiwadi and Ranwar, retain a quaint feel, and allow you a glimpse into a simpler pace of life.
Cycle through British Mumbai early in the morning, when you can have the city mostly to yourself. Set your own pace and see Colaba as it wakes up to a new day, take in the gorgeous sight of the fountain at Hutatma Chowk and pedal through Ballard Estate, the heart of Mumbai’s Colonial quarter.

For over a century the newly trademarked Taj Mahal Palace has been the epitome of gracious hospitality, high living and impeccable service. Over the years it has played host to Heads of State, Royalty, Hollywood Glitterati and Icons of popular culture. Cosseting guests in old-fashioned grandeur, Mumbai’s most iconic hotel is much loved by its well-heeled and glossy locals. Generations have celebrated life’s milestones here, making this more than just the city’s best luxury hotel, but part of its beating heart. The very first Taj hotel, yet the flagship of the group does not feel part of a chain. This ornately layered Baroque imitation of a Rajput palace, described as ‘saracenic revival architecture’, was built by founder Jamsetji Tata as a two-finger salute to the authorities after he was denied access to the city’s then top hotel.

The two quite separate wings give two very different experiences: the original Heritage rooms feature more old-fashioned décor with dark-wood furniture and smaller windows with heavy drapes. The more contemporary Tower rooms, located in the high-rise adjacent to the original hotel, are more impressive, with their gleaming floors and floor-to-ceiling glass windows. These don’t have the historical atmosphere but they really make the most of the views, and the contemporary décor is nicer, not to mention the better rates. Both parts are linked directly off the lobby, and share the same facilities. Bathrooms, regardless of wing, are great. Overall there are the usual amenities you expect from a five-star hotel: coffee and tea-making facilities, television, air-conditioning, plus the butler service that makes the truly top-end Indian hotels such a treat.

The Taj Mahal Palace has 10 restaurants serving both local and international culinary dishes. Exclusive private dining experiences can also be arranged at the Chef’s Studio. There’s a choice of two bars, and four restaurants: Masala Kraft for classic and modern Indian cuisine, Wasabi by Morimoto for Japanese seafood, Souk on the Tower rooftop for Eastern Mediterranean, and Golden Dragon for Asian. The latter totally knocked my socks off – crispy prawn dumplings, Beijing duck, steamed sea bass tossed with ginger, chilli, spring onions and soya were all utterly delectable. It has the best breakfast too, typical of five-star Indian hotels: a huge array of fresh cut fruit, yogurts, cereals, pastries, cold cuts. Eggs boiled, fried, poached or Benedict, and whatever else you fancy. Or skip the Western and watch the chef prepare a crispy dosa, or help yourself to idly and sambar.

Masala Kraft
Masala Kraft is the speciality Indian restaurant. Hand ground spices and traditional recipes spell magic on one’s palate as they blend culinary innovations with traditional methods. Catering to varying palates, Masala Kraft features an array of menus including the Masala Mumbai Tiffin, Wine Paired Menu and the Health Menu. The menu bursts with recipes seasoned with local spices, dry powders accompanied with flavored chutneys and indulgent.

Golden Dragon
Golden Dragon at The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai, is known for its talented chefs and exotic Sichuan and Cantonese preparations. Most notable specialities include the Sunday Dim Sum Brunch buffet with extensive varieties of succulent dim sums, and the live kitchen plating of authentic delicacies like Peking Duck and Beggar’s Chicken.

Shamiana
Shamiana, the original coffee shop of the city, offers an all-day dining experience with an international a la carte menu to suit every mood and palate, from breakfast through to dinner. To start the day Shamiana serves an elaborate buffet breakfast daily. The restaurant embraces a refined ease with its relaxed environment, fresh comfort food and service that is sincere and warm. Sumptuous weekend brunches focusing on interactive experiences along with a daily blackboard of curated dishes add to the experience.

Harbour Bar
The Harbour Bar at The Taj Mahal Palace is Mumbai’s first licensed lounge bar. Savour fine malts, exclusive wines, exotic cocktails and delectable global tapas in an intimate setting with cosy seating. Don’t miss From the Harbour since 1933, the signature cocktail from the Prohibition Era.
The sense of space and breadth of facilities is the perfect antidote to dense and busy Colaba. Arguably, it has best swimming pool in south Mumbai, the best high tea, the best Asian restaurant, the best (albeit expensive) hotel shops. Service is phenomenal. Staff exude a palpable sense of pride and joy to be working here, and the memorial to all those who lost their lives protecting guests in the 2011 terrorist siege, including the hotel dog Lucy, is a moving tribute to the sense of family that permeates the Palace.

Pool
The hotel has a large outdoor resort-style pool.

Spa
The brand new Jiva Spa creates a sanctuary in the midst of a bustling metro and gives you a soothing blend of contemporary massages and aromatherapy for holistic rejuvenation. Inspired by ancient Indian healing wisdom, JIVA believes that a spa unfolds a holistic path of life. Spread over 6,500 sq ft, the JIVA has multiple treatment rooms, a traditional Hammam and a Dead Sea Soak among other unique offerings.
