Ubud-bound explorers should begin their sightseeing adventure at the Ubud Palace, the former home of the last King of Ubud, located at the town’s central crossroads and host to nightly dance performances on a gilded hand-carved platform above the grand gardens. Animal lovers may also wish to visit the nearby sacred monkey forest.Ubud boasts nearly as many museums as temples. Those worth visiting include the Neka Museum for Balinese and Indonesian art, the Blanco Renaissance Museum, the Rudana, Puri Lukisan and ARMA Museum, the latter particularly on full and new moons for classic Balinese Cak Rina dance.Shadow puppetry and fire dance performances fill the evening calendar up here while special events in Ubud include the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival held every October.
Antique shops, clothing boutiques and art galleries line the streets of Ubud, offering a one of a kind and rewarding shopping experience. Our favourites include jeweller Jean-Francois Fichot (Jalan Suweta No. 6) for unique seashell rings festooned with jade to Brazilian tourmaline chokers and buffalo horn home wares. Macan Tidur (Monkey Forest Road) is also worth a stop for its museum-quality textiles from around the Indonesian archipelago as is Studio 22K (Jalan Raya Ubud) for the charming kocokan temple game, played on a canvas mat hand-painted with mythical turtles, fish and snakes by local artist Made Subrata.
