Skellig Islands

Lying 8 miles off the coast of Portmagee in South Kerry, Skellig Michael towers 714 ft above the sea and was the location for a monastic settlement from about the sixth century. The remarkably well preserved remains of this settlement draw visitors from near and far to experience the solitude and spirituality of the remote and inaccessible place, these monks called home. On the spectacular Small Skelligs 23,000 pairs of gannet nest on every available ledge making it the second largest gannet colony in the world. This Unesco World Heritage Site is set to see a huge increase in visitor numbers this year following the appearance of Skellig Michael in the new Star Wars movie and limited availability on the island means booking well in advance is essential. You can visit the island by boat or take a helicopter tour, both of which can be arranged by the hotel.

The Sheen Falls Lodge Estate and its history had always been connected to Salmon Fishing and Deer Hunting. A cottage on the grounds become the base for the First Earl of Kerry for the pursuit of fishing and hunting. In 1988 the property was sold to a Danish Family who took on the task of developing the then guests house into a 5 star luxury hotel. Its opened its doors to guests in April 1991 and has been a member of Relais & Chateaux since then.

Sip a coffee and contemplate the view from one of the plush armchairs by the window; our Deluxe Rooms overlook the waterfall, where the River Sheen runs under the old stone bridge and tumbles down towards the bay. If you’re lucky you might glimpse a heron, or the rare sight of salmon leaping upstream. The room’s colour scheme takes its cues from the landscape outside, while the furniture, fabrics and furnishings are made by local craftsmen and carefully selected by our interior designers. Our Deluxe Rooms are on average 440 square feet (41 square metres), so whether you’re a couple looking for some time alone or a small family of three, you’ll have plenty of space to unwind.

Spacious, relaxed and luxurious. Our Superior Rooms are similar to our Deluxe Rooms, but with extra space and better views of the waterfall. After a day of wandering the countryside, take some time to slow down. Perhaps settle into an easy chair and watch the water cascade beneath the bridge, or flick on the bedside lamp and curl up under the covers with a book from the room’s collection. We’ve decorated each of our rooms with pieces handmade by local artisans, from the art adorning the walls to the sumptuous seating and exquisite curtains. Our Superior Rooms are on average 505 square feet (47 square metres) and can sleep two adults with an optional extra bed for a child.

Relax in an open-plan room, with plenty of space for a family or couple planning a longer stay. On average, our Estate Rooms are 660 square feet (61 square metres). From the sitting area, ponder the changing landscape as the bay ebbs and flows, bringing seals at high tide and birdlife at low. Or sink into the soft, sumptuous couch as evening draws in and watch a film from our extensive collection. With two beds set stylishly into a wall-mounted wardrobe, our Estate Bay View Rooms can sleep two adults and up to three children, yet remain a spacious area to spend time with family, plan the day’s activities, or relax after exploring the beauty of Kenmare.

Natural light pours in through the wide windows, where you can pick a volume from the bookshelf, settle into the sofa and lose yourself between the pages. The open-plan seating area has plenty of space for the whole family to enjoy. Outside, the stone bridge spans the River Sheen, where herons ply the water as it purls around the rocks. Carefully designed interiors bring the outside in, reflecting the colours and ambience of the hotel’s natural surroundings: the heather in the gardens, the murmuring river and the oak and beech trees that envelop the estate. With extra beds available for families, and an average room size of 660 square feet (61 square metres), our Estate Falls View Rooms can accommodate up to two adults and three children, or a couple for a luxurious longer stay.

Our Bay View Suites feature an en-suite bedroom and separate drawing room, with an entrance hall adjoining the two and comprises of 800 square feet/75 square metres of space. Both rooms overlook the beauty of Kenmare Bay, with interiors influenced by the fauna and features of the natural landscape. Sit back with a book in a sumptuous armchair, or spread out on the sofa and watch a film from our collection. If, inspired by the landscape, you wish to put pen to paper, every one of our rooms and suites has a writing desk, and all our furniture is made by skilled local craftsmen.

A wonderful suite where you’ll feel at home, whether you’re a couple looking for time alone or you’re on a family holiday. Watch the river from the window of the master bedroom, and when the sun sets let the burbling water soothe you to sleep. The sitting room also overlooks the waterfall through tall, wide windows. And the décor echoes the beauty outside, from the velvety moss blanketing the river stones, to the warm wood tones and floral flourishes. Up to three children can sleep comfortably in the sitting room and two adults in the bedroom, (from 800 square feet/74-93 square metres). You can also interconnect each of the suites with a Superior Deluxe Room, hosting up to four adults and three children or two adults and five children.

Stepping into the Falls Master Suite, (1350 sq feet/125 sq m) you can sense the care and craftsmanship that have gone into its design. From the opulent architecture to the small features and flourishes, the suite is bound to charm. And with a six-seated dining table and extra bathroom, it’s a marvellous place for you to entertain company. The most striking space is the octagonal drawing room, with an oculus set into the ceiling twenty feet above. One wall is almost completely composed of wide windows, where you can watch the River Sheen roll down the waterfall, under the 18th-century stone bridge, and into Kenmare Bay. In the winter, savour a good book and a vintage brandy from your private bar, as logs from the nearby coppice crackle and flame in the fireplace.

As you approach Marianne’s Cottage, with its thatched roof and tall stone chimney, you’ll find yourself spellbound. Inside it’s just as enchanting, from the open-beam ceilings and log fires to the effortless blend of traditional charm and contemporary comfort. Sink back into the sitting-room couch with a good book in hand and a glass of wine beside you. When the night comes to a close, climb the staircase to your bedroom. Each room has a marble en-suite, where you can luxuriate in a hot bath or shower away the day’s adventures before curling up in your king-size bed. The rooms also have their own balconies, and can be converted to twin bedrooms if you’re here with family.

Roll through the private gate, down the meandering drive, to your own tucked-away cottage. You’ll feel as though you’ve passed into a pastoral idyll, with the thatched roof, birdsong tinkling in the trees and Kenmare Bay visible beyond the branches. An acre of private garden encircles the cottage, filled with flowering shrubs. Push open the front door and walk down the hallway into the drawing room: warm tones, traditional style and an open fire. The kitchen is truly memorable, with a bright bay window and an eye-level fire filling the room with a flickering glow. Beside the kitchen, the sun lounge opens out onto your terrace, with a rolling lawn leading down to the edge of the bay. Up the spiral staircase are your two bedrooms with marble en-suites. In the morning, enjoy the early sun and Atlantic air on your bedroom balcony, looking out over the bay.

Garden Cottage feels like it’s your own little secret. As you sit out on the terrace, watching the sunset over the bay and the suspension bridge in the distance, it’s as though you’re the only people for miles. Inside, there’s a kitchenette and a cosy lounge, which shares the terrace view of Kenmare Bay. In the evening, retire to your room and browse the books that our librarian has selected. The cottage has two bedrooms, one king and one twin, each with an en-suite bathroom. The décor throughout matches the traditional thatch-and-stone style, with touches and echoes of the natural surroundings.
