Born on May 3, 1469, in Florence, Italy, Niccolò Machiavelli was a diplomat for 14 years in Italy’s Florentine Republic during the Medici family’s exile. When the Medici family returned to power in 1512, Machiavelli was dismissed, jailed and then confined in his family country house. The home was connected, via underground, to the adjacent tavern “L’Albergaccio”: a popular way station where knights, travellers and pilgrims rested their horses for the night, dined and slept. The Inn is also mentioned in one of his famous letters where he describes his typical day characterized by daily work to run the farm and the nights spent in the restaurant playing and drinking with the owner, the local butcher and the other guests. During the exile Machiavelli kept on reading the Latin classics and wrote his most important manuscript “The Prince”, a masterpiece of modern political science. Today is possible to retrace Machiavelli steps visiting his house, with original furniture and decorations, then going down in the amazing wine cellars where the latest Chianti are stored and finally reaching the “Albergaccio” restaurant passing through the famous tunnel, where Machiavelli used to meet spies who informed him what was happening in Florence.
