A short drive from Taormina is one of Mother Nature’s wonders, the Alcantara Gorge. Venture to Piazza Armerina, 721m above sea level, deep in the Sicilian countryside, to discover the famous Villa Romana del Casale. Built in the 4th century as a Roman hunting lodge, the Villa houses an incredible collection of vivid mosaics depicting subjects ranging from mythological scenes to daily activities; a famous tableau illustrates women exercising in
bikini-style garments. Then explore the nearby baroque town of Caltagirone, known as the city of ceramics. Pottery has been a way of life here for hundreds of years as a result of an endless supply of good-quality local clay. The most popular style is majolica, a tin-glazed pottery in dazzling hues. Hand-painted tiles in vibrant blues and yellows can be seen all over the town, in houses and churches, parks and squares, and no visitor should miss the 142-step stone staircase, Scalinata di Santa Maria del Monte, which links the upper and lower towns – each step is inlaid with beautiful ceramic tiles. Caltagirone is also home to the island’s Museum of Ceramics, where around 2,500 exhibits chart the industry’s development from the beginning.
