A short drive from Taormina is one of Mother Nature’s wonders, the Alcantara Gorge. Carved over millennia by the Alcantara River, following in Etna’s lava flows, this is a wonderland of huge canyons, tranquil pools, rushing rapids and dramatic waterfalls. Admire the gorge’s towering lavablack walls, surrounded by luxuriant vegetation, including orchids and poppies, poplar and birch trees. A series of paths and trails makes this excellent trekking country and the river is never far away should you need a cooling dip.
Venture to Piazza Armerina, 721m above sea level, deep in the Sicilian countryside, to discover the famous Villa Romana del Casale. Built in the 4th century as a Roman hunting lodge, the Villa houses an incredible collection of vivid mosaics depicting subjects ranging from mythological scenes to daily activities; a famous tableau illustrates women exercising in
bikini-style garments. Then explore the nearby baroque town of Caltagirone, known as the city of ceramics. Pottery has been a way of life here for hundreds of years as a result of an endless supply of good-quality local clay. The most popular style is majolica, a tin-glazed pottery in dazzling hues. Hand-painted tiles in vibrant blues and yellows can be seen all over the town, in houses and churches, parks and squares, and no visitor should miss the 142-step stone staircase, Scalinata di Santa Maria del Monte, which links the upper and lower towns – each step is inlaid with beautiful ceramic tiles. Caltagirone is also home to the island’s Museum of Ceramics, where around 2,500 exhibits chart the industry’s development from the beginning.
Enjoy a scenic drive (approx 2 hours 40 mins) to the Sicilian capital, entering by the medieval district, which is rich in baroque and Arabian-Norman architecture. The major attraction here is the astounding Valley of the Temples, an archaeological park boasting eight Greek structures dedicated to deities including Hera, Concordia, Heracles and Zeus, which stand proudly on rocky crests.
