With a stable of well-schooled horses, Pignano offers to both novice and experienced riders the opportunity to discover an enchanting natural beauty of rural Tuscany. Trails with the glorious views pass through the farmlands, meadows, waterfalls, woodlands, the hills and valleys. Take a rest with a delicious gourmet picnic featuring homegrown ingredients and savour the typical flavours of Tuscany whilst relaxing in the heart of the countryside.
The estate’s virgin woodland and fields, with its protected flora and fauna, is ideal for long walking tours. Partridge, pheasants, ducks, geese, cranes, storks and the occasional small kestrel and osprey can all be spotted. Closer to the villa, swifts and swallows are plentiful and owls and doves can often be heard. Wild boar, roe deer, hare, badgers, foxes and porcupines make their homes in the surrounding woods. We can help you map trails and, on request, accompany guests on nature walks and trails. Mountain bikes available for Guests’ use.
Borgo Pignano has the most beautiful herb and flower garden which provides natural organic ingredients for the hotel’s amenities. Take a tour through the herb gardens with our trained herbalist and discover how he manufactures perfumes, oils and soaps in the herbal laboratory. Gather wild herbs and flowers to discover the traditional methods of using them within our products and cuisine.
Take part in an enthralling truffle hunting experience. Learn the ancient skills used to unearth these gourmet treasures and sample the enticing aromas and delicious flavors of fresh Italian truffles. Venture deep into the forests and hidden valleys of Borgo Pignano’s country estate alongside a local truffle hunter and his dog who will guide you around the woodlands and fields searching for gastronomic delights.
The surroundings often tempt visitors with no previous artistic experience to pick up a brush or pencil during their retreats. We frequently host group and individual art classes and the villa is well equipped with artists’ supplies that guests can use. Borgo Pignano has a deep-rooted connection with the art. Throughout the 18th Century Villa you will find an important collection of 20th Century art. The estate boasts its own gallery, art studio, artist’s house, sculpture garden and an impressive array of art equipment which is available for our guests to use at their leisure. The historic architecture, breathtaking natural landscapes and exceptional Tuscan light all make Pignano a perfect base for discovering the Art of Relaxation. Painting classes take place in English by talented students from the Royal Drawing School, London and can be booked for small groups and individuals.
The tours of the estate provide a peek behind the scenes and provide a sense for our approach to agriculture and food production. Visitors learn about how our farm works in and can inspect the beehives and assist with the collection of organic honey, take a tour of our vegetable gardens and discover how our kitchens use the herbs grown in our aromatic gardens.
Borgo Pignano is an ideal place for a luxury yoga retreat. Yoga sessions can be taken in private or within a group class. Relaxation and meditation techniques exercises are held in the indoor yoga room, a large open hall at the La Fonte farmhouse, or outside, on the lawn terrace of the main villa. It is often possible to join a yoga retreat conducted by other guests. Yoga students find Borgo Pignano’s setting therapeutic and the sessions are very popular among the guests. For those wishing to maintain their fitness programme whilst on holiday, Qi Gong sessions can be arranged. Practicing AntiGravity Yoga techniques make you not only more efficient with your movements and more confident physically, but also a lot lighter! AntiGravity has two meanings: 1) playing within the laws of physics 2) against graveness – keep moving, stay light-hearted and have fun. AntiGravity Yoga relaxes mind and calms the nervous system, improves concentration, strength, flexibility and moving joints. It’s beneficial for everyone and will leave you feeling revitalized and happy.
Our Wine Tastings take place in our medieval cellar and offer the opportunity to sample a selection of Organic Tuscan wines from the finest local suppliers. Guests will also enjoy a selection of our home-based products such as Salami, Cold cuts and breads.
A journey from earth to plate is in the heart of our natural food philosophy at Borgo Pignano. On our cooking classes, we focus on the artisanal methods of cooking. Classes take place in a traditional kitchen and base on the classic Tuscan ways of making traditional bread, focaccia and delicious fresh pasta. Learn the art of using different flours, discover how to make perfect fresh dough and be inspired by the secret traditions of the Tuscan kitchen.
From time to time Enzo, Pignano’s Chief Farmer, is organizing lovely outings to show his lands to the guests. Enzo was born in Lajatico, 20 miles from Borgo Pignano, and has spent his entire life living and working in the Tuscan countryside. Enzo is responsible for tending all Borgo Pignano’s arable lands and forests and does so with a paternal pride. His close connection to the countryside means he also manages a local hunting reserve. Please be welcomed to take a unique experience strolling across the estate with our resident herbalist Lisabetta. During this hands-on learning walk, Lisabetta will help you to identify and pick wild and cultivated healing plants and herbs which are efficient to treat a variety of ailments and health complications. Lisabetta will inspire and engage you with her charm, depth of understanding and a few secret recipes. Join our expert herbalist and discover a world of fragrances, colors, essential oils and remedies. Learn how to best apply these organic treatments on you and your loved ones.
Healthy bees are vital to the well-being of Borgo Pignano and, as bee colonies around the world collapse, we have taken pains to ensure that we do everything possible to sustain them. We tend a large cross-section of flowers and plants that attract bees, give rise to the finest Millefiori flavored honey and, most importantly, help with the pollination of vegetables and fruits. Guests are welcomed to take a tour to the beehives with our Beekeeper to see how the honeybees occupy themselves. Visitors can learn about bee keeping and the traditional methods for extracting honey and beeswax while discovering hierarchy of the hive and its own colony with a Queen, drones and worker bees.
The Medieval town of Volterra is internationally recognized for its unique, world-class craftsmanship of chalky alabaster. Now you can experience a unique one-hour workshop in the laboratory of a well-known alabaster artist (The Grandoli Family) and discover the traditional techniques of working with this soft stone. After your Alabaster experience, you may also take home a creation you have made with the artist – an authentic piece of art from Volterra.
The mysteries of the magical night sky unfold under the guidance of the enthusiastic group of amateur astronomers based in Volterra. A memorable observing experience, where you can catch the most beautiful objects in the sky available during the evenings. You will be using an advanced equipment under the clear open skies or the reflecting telescope Ritchey-Chretien available on site. This is a fascinating opportunity for all our guests to learn about the stars, planets and galaxies. Every Friday night starting from 09.30pm at Mazzolla. Private classes available.

Today, this sensitively restored and privately owned Borgo, offers warm and gracious hospitality in a tranquil setting about 500 meters above sea level, with some of the most commanding views in all of Tuscany that can stretch to the Mediterranean. There’s nowhere better or prettier for days filled with long horseback rides, treks and mountain biking. Inside the main villa are spacious public rooms including the library, billiards room, ballroom and lounge, plus 14 elegant en-suite rooms and suites. Some of the rooms have original frescoes; all are furnished with exquisite antiques, original artwork, Italian linens and chandeliers. For a fine-dining experience, head to Villa Pignano’s à la carte restaurant, which uses the freshest ingredients from the estate’s organic vegetable gardens. And during the summer, meals may be taken within the pretty garden at the utterly Tuscan Restaurant Al Fresco with wood-fired pizza oven. Breakfast is served in the shady courtyard.
Once a hilltop hamlet, the property has been lovingly restored to preserve its original grandeur and romance. Borgo Pignano’s main building is an 18th century villa surrounded by traditionally planted English gardens overlooking pristine landscapes of Tuscany that have changed little since Renaissance times. Perched on a hilltop, the villa accommodation offers stunning views of olive groves, vineyards, fields and woods. There are fourteen elegant rooms and suites, some with original frescoes and all with en-suite marble and travertine bathrooms. The rooms are decorated with painted frescos, patterned textiles and antique furnishings. A grand stone staircase leads to the upper stories and an elevator serves all floors of the villa. Wi-Fi is available throughout the estate.
Additional luxurious accommodation is available at La Canonica, a beautifully renovated ancient priest’s house spanning two private apartments with shared drawing room and medieval kitchen. Secluded maisonettes, country cottages and a large lakeside farmhouse with kitchen and lounge facilities are perfect for families.

Maisonette La Casa Del Guardia
Casa del Guardia is a spacious maisonette occupying the entire first floor of a seventeenth-century building with a beautiful, natural stone exterior. During the nineteenth century, this property served as a dwelling for the guard of the estate.

Located in front of the hamlet’s old well, this charming three-tiered maisonette features a spacious and comfortable living and dining room with a fully equipped country kitchen, a wood burning stove and a guest bathroom on the ground floor.

This attractive maisonette features a spacious master bedroom, a loft that overlooks a large living and dining room, an original wood burning stove and a fully equipped kitchen.

Maisonette La Piccionaia
This lovely split level maisonette offers beautiful views of the rolling Tuscan hills and the medieval town of Volterra.

Maisonette La Legnaia
Built on two levels, it features a comfortable living room with a corner kitchen on the first level and a bedroom with a queen French (140 cm) bed, an en-suite bathroom and a small private terrace on the second level.

Casa Del Lago Cottage
Casa del Lago is a peaceful cottage – a mini luxury villa – with a covered porch with views over gently sloping fields and a small natural lake surrounded by poplars and alders.

The Artists'House cottage
The ground floor contains a spacious studio with a wood-burning stove, fully equipped kitchen, dining area and bedroom with an antique Napoleonic sleigh bed and bathroom with large walk-in shower. A flight of stairs leads to the master bedroom, which has a king bed, en-suite bathroom and terrace. The woodlands in which Caille is sited include a peaceful, outside lounging area.

La Canonica
La Canonica, the Priest’s house, adjoins the ancient church of San Bartolomeo and contains exceptional original features such as medieval stonework, archways, columns, vaulted ceilings, terracotta floors and restored medieval frescoes. La Canonica can be used as one large three bedroom, private house or independently as two separate suites (San Bartolomeo & Il Pievano Suites). The building offers a shared entrance hall, elegant sitting room, TV room and a fully equipped mediaeval kitchen with refectory table. A 2-bedroom suite and 1-bedroom Suite are located on the upper floor. La Canonica also features a courtyard garden draped in vines and provides a quiet spot for a morning coffee or pre-dinner aperitivo.
At a time when moments of relaxation few and far between, your dining experience at Borgo Pignano will be filled with a sense of nature and well-being. We provide breakfasts made to be lingered over, al-fresco meals in a relaxed open-air setting and gourmet dinners in our formal restaurant. Wherever you choose to dine you will can enjoy excellent service in a tasteful setting. Everything starts from our home-grown or locally sourced raw materials and we are careful to harvest vegetables and fruits at their peak.
In the Bakery, breads are produced with sourdough, while pastries and fresh pasta come from a fine selection of ancient wheat flours produced from grains grown on the property. Pignano’s free-range pigs and hens provide eggs and meat for our restaurant, while our bees produce the honey, our olive groves and vineyard help generate our oils and wine. Our creative approach to food can be enjoyed in to two different dining experiences.
In the evenings, guests are invited for drinks in the living room where the in-house mixologist makes cocktails whilst waiters circulate paired canapés. It feels old-world in the very best sense, fostering an atmosphere of earthy, cosy luxury in which guests are treated like old friends.

Restaurant Al Fresco
During the summer our traditional Restaurant Al Fresco offers an informal, relaxed dining experience set within a beautiful garden environment. Guests can savour authentic Tuscan recipes, such as grilled meat, Mediterranean sea catch of the day, stone-baked pizza cooked in a classic wood fired oven, together with homemade organic beers and wines.

Wine Tasting
At Borgo Pignano we offer our guest the exclusive opportunity to journey into the world of organic and biodynamic wines. Discover how this extraordinary region of Tuscany has produced exceptional wines for thousands of years and learn a little about both traditional and contemporary wine production methods. Wine tastings take place in the historic cellar of Pignano’s grand 18th Century villa where wine expert Francesco shares his deep-rooted passion for wine.
Some guests are just seduced by the serenity of the estate and do not wander far: they swim in the infinity pool, soak up the sun, paint, read and draw or stroll among the orchards, gardens and woodland paths. Others practice yoga, or go horse riding or mountain biking. Borgo Pignano often plays host to groups of enthusiastic cyclists who enjoy the rigor of 30 to 120 km rides along Tuscany’s winding country roads. Runners and hikers can test their mettle on the paths and roads surrounding the Borgo.



Pool
The pool was carved from an ancient limestone quarry, which supplied most of the stone used to build Porta dell’Arco, one of the principal gateways of Volterra as well as Pignano’s own buildings. The pool’s depth varies from 0.75 to 2.40 meters with a total surface area of 141 sq. meters. It is surrounded by a limestone terrace with chaises longues and parasols. Adjacent to the pool area there is an outdoor bar and a manicured lawn for those seeking tranquility. A small, separate swimming pool, built specially for children, is available for all children under the age of twelve.

Spa
The new wellness area brings the joys and freshness of nature to the body. Drawing inspiration from Pignano’s unspoilt terrain, abundant gardens, wild flower meadows and organic farmland, each of our natural spa treatments and wellbeing therapies have been created using organic ingredients grown on the estate. Our trained herbalist uses flowers, herbs, plant extracts, oils and honeys that promote a sense of well-being. Discover Pignano’s wellness centre in the heart of our historic hamlet and experience another level of peace and tranquillity. Enjoy our dry sauna and steam bath or book a treatment in our private wellness suites.

Gym
Our gym is housed near the main villa and private use can be reserved at the Reception desk. We can also arrange a personal fitness instructor on request for one-off sessions or regular daily fitness routines.
