Open every day except MondaySarteano near Fonteverde is home to a breath-taking find from the age of the Etruscans: the Tomb of the Infernal Quadriga, dating from the IV century B.C. The underground tomb is decorated with frescoes showing vivid, thrilling scenes such as a racing quadriga or chariot, pulled by mythological beasts. Other paintings depict two men at a banquet and a fierce three-headed snake. The tomb, which lies just outside the village of Sarteano, can only be visited on Saturdays by appointment to protect it from over exposure.

Roughly half of the 78 rooms are in the historic building; the other half are in the adjacent and more recent construction. Rooms in the historic part are in classic old-world style with soft carpets, draped curtains and marble travertine bathrooms with showers in the tub. The design is similar in the modern buildings of the hotel, albeit the furbishing is a bit more recent and bathrooms are more spacious with a separate rain shower. All rooms are quiet and face the valley or the woods at the rear of the hotel. If you can splash out, it’s well worth getting a suite with a balcony overlooking the Val d’Orcia. A sunset aperitif on your private terrace would be quite the grand experience. Room service is swift and friendly and my champagne breakfast with silverware on a white-clothed table would have been appropriate for a Medici heir (not that there are any left).

Restaurant Ferdinando serves dinner in a refined setting. The menu is based on rustic Tuscan staples from homemade pici (thick egg-free spaghetti) and vegetable soups to platters of local cold cuts and cheeses; it also offers a wide selection of lighter Mediterranean, gluten-free and vegetarian dishes such as sautéd beans with cherry tomatoes, local mint and walnuts. The menu always supplies a seafood option and the fish of the day on my visit – a sea bream – was perfectly cooked. For longer stays, the spa’s nutritionist and medical staff can put together individual diet plans. Lunch and light snacks are served in a more laidback ambiance at the restaurant and café near the thermal pools.
