The camp is located in a secluded area of the Masai Mara National Reserve, far from other properties so guests enjoy a truly “exclusive” safari.
The camp overlooks Sand River, a picturesque combination of sand banks, dramatic rocks and riverine forest – an idyllic setting for a late breakfast!
Sand River Masai Mara is quite literally on the Migration route and guests are often fortunate to be able to watch wildebeest and zebra crossing the Sand River from the comfort of their tent verandah.
The camp has an opulent feel, and evokes a feeling of having stepped back in time to the heyday of great safaris.
The Masai Mara is renowned for its spectacular game viewing and wildlife interactions. Why not enjoy it with the most traditional of safari activities – a game drive! The Masai Mara is famed for is red-adorned Maasai tribe, who have lived in this area for centuries. While at Elewana Sand River Masai Mara guests can visit a local village or school and witness the traditions of the Maasai people that still hold strong today.

Situated along the banks of a river from which it has taken its name, Elewana Sand River Masai Mara is located within the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya on a secluded and picturesque site. The camp enjoys stunning views over the Sand River and out to the neighbouring grassy hills and plains of Tanzania. The camp is spread over two sites – the Sand River property and Little Sand River nearby. Both are positioned in the shade of trees rising close to the Sand River in Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve. The camp sits on the migration route for the millions of wildebeest, zebra and Thompson’s gazelle that move between Serengeti and Maasai Mara every year.
Guests enjoy the privilege of exclusive views of the plains and hills dotted with thousands of animals as well as being in the thick of the excitement of frenetic and famed river crossings, all from the comfort of camp. Comprising of 16 tented accommodations, Elewana Sand River Masai Mara replicates the heyday of exclusive permanent tented camps of the late 1920’s. Divided into two separate but adjoining campsites of 10 and 6 tents, each area possessing its own designated dining and public areas, Elewana Sand River Masai Mara provides an atmosphere of exclusivity and class.
Guest accommodation at Sand River consists of 16 tents over the two sites – 15 plus family unit at the larger property and 5 at the smaller camp. Like the communal tents, they are positioned in the shade of trees and constructed from timber and canvas. They also provide equally super views! Inside, the 1920s theme continues, with a gorgeous four-poster bed, bedside tables and lighting, sumptuous seating in leather and brocade, a storage chest as a table, Persian rugs, and beautifully draped curtains – you really will feel as though you have travelled back in time! The en-suite facilities of each tent comprise a flush toilet, twin washbasins and mirrors, and a bathtub with shower attachment. All fittings are simply exquisite, recalling Hollywood in their glamorous style. The family unit has all the features of a standard tent, in addition to a twin bedroom for children and a separate seating area for families to spend time together. All accommodation is truly high spec!


Luxury Tented Suites
Elewana Sand River Masai Mara has 16 luxury tented accommodations divided into two separate but adjoining campsites of 10 and 6 tents. Each “camp” possesses its own designated dining and public areas, thereby creating an increased sense of exclusivity and privacy. The interior fixtures and furnishings mirror this period perfectly, reminding all who visit of those countless Hollywood movies that have paid homage to a classic era of African adventure. There are 4 twin and 11 double tents.

Family Tent
An expansive Family Tent comprises of double and twin ensuite rooms adjoined by a lounger area. The family tent enjoys views over the Sand River.
Each has a lavish lounge and dining room, in addition to outdoor dining areas. The lounges feature comfortable chairs, sofas and other seating in a variety of fabrics including leather. Classic storage chests function as coffee tables, while telescopes and Persian rugs add a little explorer style! Both dining rooms contain very smart leather chairs around individual tables, while additional dining furniture is set up in the grounds. The views throughout both sites are superb – down to the Sand River with its resident wildlife and across to the game-rich plains!



Dining
A sunset over the Masai Mara plains enjoyed with a drink in hand is an age-old safari tradition. Sit back in comfy camp chairs, with the waiter to bring you your tipple of choice, and some delicious bitings. Sundowners are included in Game Package. Enjoy a delicious breakfast or lunch surrounded by the sights and sounds of the African bush. Under the shade of the custom-designed awning on the safari vehicle sit at a fully-laid table with home-cooked gourmet food. Bush meals are included in Game Package.
The larger camp also has a plunge pool flanked by sunloungers, and even a billiards room. It is unusual to find billiards at a safari camp, but we like the room’s social feel!
