Ol Donyo Lodge is nestled in the untouched foothills of the rolling Chyulu Hills in the south-east of Kenya. This secluded and exclusive safari lodge has ten luxurious suites all enjoying majestic views of Mount Kilimanjaro and superb riding safaris. Ol Donyo Lodge, situated between Tsavo and Amboseli, has exclusive access to a quarter of a million acres of one of the few remaining corners of wild Africa, the Mbirikani Group Ranch. This untouched wilderness where Maasai herdsmen live in total harmony with nature is awe-inspiring. The main area is set high on the hillside, and opens out onto the plains below, with Mount Kilimanjaro ever present in the distance.
The four pool villas each have two bedrooms and are ideal for families or small groups of friends. They are designed to be versatile and function either as family villas or for two couples while still maintaining an element of privacy. One of the villas functions more as a bush home intended for families or groups of friends. There are two bedrooms and each bedroom has its own spacious en-suite bathroom, complete with an indoor and outdoor shower, “star bed”, private pool and sundowner viewing deck.
The ten thatch-roof lodgings are nestled in the trees on the slopes of the Chyulu Hills and look out on a sweeping view of the acacia-dotted savanna that stretches all the way to Mount Kilimanjaro. Private, spacious verandas seamlessly blend indoor and outdoor living areas, and each suite is individually decorated, drawing design inspiration from traditional Maasai architecture and appointed with handicrafts from across Africa. Most of the suites have private plunge pools, and each is crowned with a rooftop terrace with a cozy outdoor “star bed.”
Eight suites feature outdoor plunge pools on their private terraces. Each of these accommodations has a lounge, indoor and outdoor showers, a deep stone bath, luxury bath amenities, hair dryer, a safe, mosquito netting for beds, a coffee and tea tray, and a rooftop star bed. Rooms can be configured with twin or double beds.
No two of the lodge’s ten bedrooms is exactly the same, but what is consistent is the view to Mt. Kilimanjaro and the lodge’s famous waterhole as well as star beds atop each of the suites for sleeping under the stars. The décor is luxurious and opulent, while still retaining the atmosphere and sense of place that is an essential ingredient of an outstanding bush lodge. Art from around Africa coupled with the photography of Carol Beckwith, Angela Fisher and of course Beverly Joubert, create a commanding space under the high thatch roofs. The design is contemporary and yet traditional.
