ACTIVITIES:
Asia’s smallest country by area and population, the Maldives is a chain of nearly one thousand two hundred coral islands perched on a vast underwater mountain range. Whiter-than-white sand, warm, luminous water and great seafood, all make the Maldives a destination for a bucket-list holiday.
Wander down Majeedhee Magu, lined with shops selling accessories, electronics, groceries and clothing. Find souvenirs like local fibre mats and miniature dhonis (local boats) on Chandhanee Magu and Orchid Magu near Republic Square. Orchid Magu also has the STO Trade Centre, the city’s biggest supermarket.
This museum houses treasures that include weaponry and royal and religious relics from the ancient and medieval periods of Maldivian history. The remnants of house-hold items and the clothing of those times are particularly intriguing, as are the intricately-carved pieces of wood that showcase the country’s conversion to Islam in the 12th century.
Discover the fascinating variety of fish, marine creatures and corals that populate the reefs surrounding the islands. Even if you don’t swim well, or have never snorkelled before, this provides an easy-to-access window into this underwater wonderland.
Sign up for an introductory dive and explore the underwater caves, coral gardens and pinnacles at the popular dive sites around the Maldives. There are over a hundred sites to choose from, with sharks, wrasses, rays, eels and plenty more. The waters are so warm that you don’t usually need a wetsuit.
The oldest mosque in the Maldives, Old Friday Mosque dates back to 1656. The structure is made of coral stone, into which Quranic inscriptions have been chiselled, and the interiors feature stunning lacquer-work and fine wood-carvings. As it is a religious structure, be sensitive to local sensibilities while visiting.
If you plan to go diving in the Maldives, good shops to buy your gear at include Dive Shop and Water World on Chandanee Magu in Male, which carries a full range of equipment from big-name brands. Surf boards, accessories and surf wear are available at Atoll Surf on Boduthakurufaanu Magu.

Escape the frenetic pace and chaos of everyday life, in to luxury’s very own lap at Taj Exotica Resort & Spa, Maldives. Away from the sparkling lights of Male, this hotel is spread across the Emboodhu Finolhu island in the middle of one of the largest lagoons in Maldives. Renowned for its rich flora and fauna, this tropical isle, also known as the Three Coconut Isle, is situated amidst the coral reefs. A 15-minute speedboat ride from the airport brings you to the idyllic resort surrounded by the azure waters of the Indian Ocean. Set delicately over the lagoon, this postcard-perfect getaway offers 64 sea-view villas and suites that are luxurious and lavish; yet maintain a fine balance with nature.
