• Visiting Mowani Mountain Lodge in southern Damaraland is about the situation and landscape as much as the wildlife. Perched high on a rocky outcrop, the 15 grass-roofed rooms and suites are tucked in amongst giant ochre boulders, seamlessly blending into their environment and offering endless views across the arid plains to the mountains in the distance.
  • Head out on nature walks straight from the camp in the company of expert guides to explore the dry riverbeds, or go further afield in search of desert-adapted elephants and the ancient rock engravings at Twyfelfontein.
  • Take time to enjoy the camp’s singular location though: drink in the panoramic views from your private deck, take a dip in a natural rock pool set amongst giant boulders, and watch dramatic sunsets from one of the most spectacular sundowner spots in Africa.
  • After a three-course dinner in the elegant lodge, step outside and look up: the lack of light pollution reveals a night sky unlike anything you have seen before.
  • Mouth-watering meals await guests after a rewarding day of game viewing, while a sparkling swimming pool, tucked between boulders, offers a cooling respite between adventures.
  • Guests can join a game drive in the renowned Twyfelfontein region in search of desert-adapted elephant. A trip to the ancient San (Bushmen) rock engravings is one of the highlights of the area.

Mowani Mountain Camp Damaraland

Between the Ugab and the Huab Rivers in Southern Damaraland lies a vast and unspoilt wilderness. The area boasts magnificent desert scenery, fascinating geological formations, archaeological sites and a unique variety of desert fauna and flora. In the heart of this area, Mowani Mountain Lodge is hidden away on a granite kopje, with views of the surrounding wilderness. Mowani is made up of 13 en suite rooms, each set as their own private, thatched-roof dwelling, and showcasing views toward either the surrounding valley or the nearby hilltops. Two luxury suites are built in the same style, with more space and outdoor bathrooms in addition to the en suite facilities. In this ultimate seclusion, the thrill of an outdoor shower can be an exhilarating way to commune with nature. The luxury suites also have private dining decks, so that you can enjoy a sunset drink, and move right into dinner under the stars.

The main dining room, as well as the lounge and bar, overlook the waterhole, perfectly positioned to maximize your chance of a casual encounter with the local wildlife. The region surrounding Mowani Mountain Camp in Damaraland is the southernmost range of the black rhino and desert elephant. While you will want to reserve at least one afternoon to enjoy the views from the comfort of the pool and lounge decks, Mowani is located with exploration in mind. Spend your days with an expert local guide tracking elephants among the dunes, or visit Twyfelfontein, Namibia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you will see cave etchings and spectacular formations.

We’re bringing a touch of Natural Selection character to the Namib Desert and Kwessi Dunes will feature our usual cool and comfortable style with a few quirks along the way. In the bedrooms, you can expect vintage four-poster beds, striped canvas walls and a separate ‘star gazer’ room that’s completely open to the sky for maximum galaxy-gazing as you fall asleep. Each bedroom also has an ensuite bathroom with both indoor and outdoor showers and a shaded, outdoor veranda. High thatched roofs will keep you cool during the hot desert days (and nights!) and you’ll be pleased to hear that the bedrooms are air conditioned too.

The view from the lodge is spectacular and the glass windows and doors at the main area look out onto the undulating sand that only ends when it meets the mountains, far in the distance. Inside, there’s a well-stocked bar, library area and several seating and dining areas. When the sun rises in the morning, head to the camp fire for a morning cuppa, whilst in the heat of the day, the swimming pool is the only place to be
