ACTIVITIES:
Do you love the wide-open spaces, dunes and vistas of NamibRand – and Wolwedans in particular? Now you can experience this magnificent landscape and it’s wild inhabitants from horseback. Other than walking, there can hardly be a better way to get up close and personal with nature. Your first horseback ride is included in your stay and any additional rides are a premium activity for which packages can be tailored to suit each guest’s riding ability.
A special attraction at NamibRand Nature Reserve is hot-air ballooning. This seasonal activity allows you to float over the dune belts and never-ending plains of the Namib Desert; providing unforgettable and breathtaking 360-degree vistas. From the best viewpoint imaginable, you admire the stark beauty of the Namib for about an hour, before celebrating this once in a lifetime experience with a champagne breakfast at the landing spot.
In collaboration with our sister company NatureWings, Wolwedans can offer you an aerial view of the world’s oldest arid landscape. Based on the length of your stay, you could have your pick of four alternate routes. For a short introductory flight over the dunes of Sossusvlei, opt for routes A or B (see below). For guests staying three nights or longer, a full day fly-in safari provides the ideal opportunity to visit some of Namibia’s famous attractions in the far South.
The Wolwedans Village is our base camp of operations. It’s abuzz with activity and one of the most exciting places at Wolwedans. Passionate team members will explain all aspects of our interdependent base operations and lead this tour of our back of house operations. We explore the advanced water management system and grey-water infrastructure as well as the solar panel field. In a bid to cut our carbon footprint we have invested heavily in energy-reduction initiatives, while a state-of-the-art photovoltaic power installation has meant that all of our camps now run entirely on solar power.
You will learn about small and large desert dwellers and their quest for survival in this harsh and unforgiving environment, and you’ll discover a diverse flora, ranging from resilient beauty to hardened survivor – not to mention NamibRand’s fascinating geology.
TokTokkie Trails is a separate concession on the reserve and offers guided desert walking trails in the southeast of the NamibRand Nature Reserve. The trail is two nights long and can easily be integrated into a visit to Wolwedans (subsequently becoming a four-night stay). The pace of the trail is leisurely and designed for guests from 10 to 70 years of age. Daily distances do not exceed 10 kilometers to ensure close-up viewing of the desert’s intriguing flora and micro-fauna. Groups (which could also be exclusive) are limited to 8 persons to ensure personal attention.
The starkness of Sossusvlei and the wild beauty of NamibRand provides the perfect backdrop for amateur and professional photographers alike. The incredible and abundant contrasts of colour and geology of the landscapes will give ample opportunity for the perfect shot.

Dune Lodge is the largest of the three Wolwedans properties, and has one of the finest locations on top of a dune field. Views are 360 degrees here, overlooking panoramic vistas in all directions and capturing the beauty of the desert in a most memorable way. The building style is a combination of wooden structures and canvas blinds, opening up to the desert beyond. The lodge reflects the ambience of a tented camp, but provides the comfort and protection of a permanent building. Each of the nine spacious chalets with en-suite bathrooms has a private verandah, which connects you to vast stretches of untouched sand. Sleeping with your canvas blinds open is just like sleeping under the stars.
All communal areas of the lodge open out onto decks with superb views. The variety of recreational space makes a visit both exciting and relaxing. To make the most of your visit we recommend you stay for three nights. The main area, comprises two lounges, a number of sun downer decks, a fireplace, tea deck, library, wine cellar and two dining rooms. The many verandas look out over superb views, as does the open-air swimming pool. Those who seek total seclusion will be attracted to the Mountain View Suite, which provides a private living and dining area and great comfort and style.

Dunes Lodge reflects the ambience of a tented camp, but provides the comfort and protection of a permanent building. Each of the nine spacious chalets with en-suite bathrooms sports a private verandah, which connects to vast stretches of untouched sand. Sleeping with the canvas blinds open is just like sleeping under the stars. The design recalls colonial safari aesthetics. Leather armchairs, old chests, soft rugs, vintage furniture, paraffin lanterns and antique collectables all encapsulate the sensibility reminiscent of the bygone era.

Standard Chalet
The ten spacious chalets have wooden structures and canvas blinds, allowing for the ambience of a tented camp. Rolling up the blinds completely, you’ll enjoy incredible views of your surroundings and feel like you’re sleeping out in the desert. Be sure to take warm clothes in winter! While inside each chalet, you’ll find crisp white sheets, warm down duvets, and an en suite bathroom with solar-heated hot showers. Walk out onto your private veranda to watch as the desert comes to life in the morning or admire the magnificent star-lit sky in the evening.
Wolwedans Dunes Lodge has two dining rooms in which you can enjoy your meals. Meals are prepared by the talented chefs and feature only the freshest, organic produce. Enjoy breakfast out in the open, with the sight of the morning light illuminating the dunes. After your morning’s activity, return for a delicious, refreshing lunch before setting out again. The evening meal features elegant table settings and a more lavish meal, whilst still retaining the unpretentious nature of Wolwedans.

Wine and Dine
All meals at Wolwedans are a lavish, but unpretentious affair. They always exude a sense of occasion with elegant table settings, candlelight and exuberant menu announcements in the local Nama language. Wolwedans has a reputation for serving the best meals on the Namibian safari circuit and we are more than happy to indulge you with our innovative, wholesome and sophisticated ‘bush-cuisine’, prepared lovingly with homegrown organic fresh produce (we have our own organic gardens at Wolwedans) and paired with excellent local and South African wines.
The main complex consists of two lounges, a number of sundowner decks, a cosy fireplace, a tea deck, a library, the wine cellar and two dining rooms. The lodge also has a welcoming swimming pool, which is suspended above the sand and has lovely views of the surrounding landscape.

Pool
The swimming pool is raised on a wooden deck and offers a wonderful place to cool off after a day of desert exploring.
Spa
To enhance wellbeing during your stay, Wolwedans offers you the services of a seasonal massage therapist specializing in Swedish massage, Marula Oil Massage, Indian Head Massage and Foot Massage. Manicures & pedicures as well as facials are also provided for the women (or men) who would like to enjoy their Namibian desert safari in style. Enjoy a range of these soothing therapies in the serenity of the surrounding desert, making your Wolwedans experience even more memorable.
