The grand dame of Amsterdam has provided a pillow for the night for everyone from Queen Elizabeth II to David Bowie and The Rolling Stones. On the river Amstel, though slightly out of the main canal belt, it couples old-world style with gracious service, and has a top-class restaurant and river-view pool. On the river Amstel, a 10-minute walk from the opera house, Waterlooplein flea market and Jewish Historical museum. The historical canal belt begins just across the river and the hip De Pijp dining and café quarter and Albert Cuyp market are a 10-minute walk. Museumplein is a 20-minute walk (10 minutes by tram) and Centraal Station is under 10 minutes away by metro.
Service is warm, polite without being stiffly formal and eschews hotel-school gush. A friendly barman brought cocktails to the lounge on request (after service there had closed), and restaurant staff were outgoing and engaging. There’s a 15-metre-long pool at river level (looking out onto the water), a small but well-equipped gym (also with river view) and a wellness centre with a sauna, steam room and hot tub. Although there are no in-house beauty treatments, there is, following a long tradition, a physiotherapist. (Dr J. G. Mezger, one of the founders of physiotherapy, practised at the hotel when it first opened).
Rooms belong to another era in a most agreeable way. They are large, with high ceilings and reached by corridors wide enough for two ample crinolines to pass in full sail. Décor varies: warm reds or cool blues; toile de jouy wallpaper, or perhaps colourful parrots; antique-style furniture (largely French), Delftware and old prints. Mod cons (ironing board, espresso machine, quiet airco) are all in place, with classic touches, too, such as a shoe-shine and mending service. There’s a good-sized desk to work on, chairs to relax in and a firmly comfortable bed with blissfully soft pillows. Bathrooms, too, are large with a separate shower and tub.

To complete the ultimate experience of the suite, we worked closely with the Rijksmuseum, Fendi Furniture and changing well-known Dutch designers such as Piet Hein Eek and Erwin Olaf. The suite is spacious, with a charming entrance, a spacious study, a bedroom, two bathrooms with gold-plated faucets, ornaments, a separate bath and rain shower and a spacious sitting room.

Presidential Suite

Enjoy the complete experience with the suites connected, furnished with two bedrooms, living room with dining table and sitting area, and three bathrooms that are equipped with rain shower, separate bath and toilet. The total area is 137 m². The Presidential Twin Executive Room, Presidential Junior Suite and the Presidential Business Suite can also be reserved separately.

Rembrandt Suite
The Rembrandt Suite was developed in collaboration with the Rembrandt House Museum . We are reminded of the artist every day and are connected to him by his statue in front of the hotel square. From the moment you walk into the suite you will become acquainted with the life of Rembrandt van Rijn. Admire the beautiful giclees of etchings and drawings and learn about the painter from the Rembrandt books in the room. The suite is very spacious with a surface of 55m² and you enjoy the view that inspired Rembrandt. The Rembrandt Suite overlooks the ‘De Omval’, a place where Rembrandt often came and of which he made several drawings. With the sliding door you create a comfortable, private seating area that is shielded from the separate bedroom. The marble bathroom has exclusive Rembrandt wallpaper and is equipped with a rain shower, a separate bath, and a toilet.

Royal Suite
The Royal Suite is a large class apartment that has been decorated in a classic French style. The suite has an elegant entrance, a spacious sitting room with comfortable furniture, a dining room with seating for eight, a luxurious leather-trimmed desk, a bedroom with four-poster bed, a dressing room, a lavish bathroom with gold-plated faucets and ornaments, separate bath and rain shower. The bullet-proof windows overlook the Amstel River on two sides and the square at the front. From the sitting room there is also access to a French balcony that is located on the waterfront. The Royal Suite has an area of 116 m².
In La Rive riverside restaurant, chef Rogér Rassin creates wonders. A bittersweet, crunchy marinated tomato amuse on ginger sorbet kick-starts all parts of the palate before a journey that takes you from complex combos (slivers of raw scallop with veal tartare, ceps and grated dehydrated balsamic vinegar) through subtle classics such as sea bass with creamy bagna càuda to heavenly haute-cuisine comfort food: 12-hour braised beef with duck liver, orange and endive. Wines are expertly matched, with clever diversions, such as a plummy, umami-rich sake with the scallops, and under expert maitre d’ Ronald Opten, staff are well-informed about dishes and ingredients. A brasserie next door offers simpler meals from lamb curry to Caesar salad.

Amstel Brasserie
The Amstel Brasserie surprises you with a contemporary kitchen, informal charm and a breathtaking view over the Amstel. The menu follows the seasons with tasteful brasserie-style dishes, making the Amstel Brasserie the perfect place for a quiet lunch or dinner. In addition to a changing three-course menu for the attractive price of € 49 , the menu offers seasonal dishes and classics such as Caesar salad, the tender Amstelburger or beef croquettes with brioche bread. The Amstel Brasserie is located on the level of the Amstel river.

Amstel Lounge
The classic appearance, the location in the heart of the hotel and the view have traditionally made the lounge the meeting place in the hotel. The walls are painted in deep dark blue so that the beautiful crystal chandeliers look even more beautiful and emphasize the relaxing atmosphere. Enjoy a cup of coffee, a delicious glass of wine, the well-known Royal Afternoon Tea or the Late Tea.

Amstel Terraces
In good weather you can have lunch or dinner on one of the terraces on the Amstel. The A bar terrace has two comfortable lounge sofas overlooking the river where you can snuggle up with a drink and a snack and enjoy the afternoon until late at night. The terrace is equipped with heating elements so that it is always nice to be there. The terrace at our Health & Fitness club offers members and our hotel guests a private terrace with comfortable loungers.

Wine Room
The Wine Room is located next to the La Rive restaurant. Thousands of bottles of the best wines in the world are stored here. Our maître sommelier Ronald Opten is happy to explain that the Wine Room has the most expensive ‘wallpaper’ of the hotel. This gives the space an inspiring character. The oak table in the middle of these liquid treasures offers space for a private breakfast, lunch or dinner for up to sixteen people. Here you can enjoy all the culinary surprises and hospitality of La Rive. You can close the entrance doors if you want to sit completely private or leave it open if you prefer to experience the atmosphere of the restaurant. In the Wine Room we serve the full La Rive menu and for larger groups we are happy to arrange a customized menu with you.

Bar
In A bar everything comes together that is so special about Amsterdam and the surrounding area. It is a beautiful, contemporary cocktail bar as they can be found worldwide in Grande Dame hotels. The A bar drinks menu offers a range of surprising cocktails based on local liqueurs and ingredients prepared in-house. The Amsterdam distillery De Liefde, from Wijnand Fockink, a small-scale distillery, provides cherry, hibiscus and other liqueurs. The hotel kitchen is used to make essential components for the cocktails. Syrups of flowers for example, but also raspberry-strawberry shrub.

Restaurant La Rive
Enjoy the water in La Rive. Culinary delights and exceptional hospitality have placed La Rive in a class of its own for years. Under the inspiring culinary direction of Executive Chef Rogér Rassin, Maître Ronald Opten and Sommelier Ted Bunnik, a dinner at restaurant La Rive is a special experience. Restaurant La Rive is inspired by French-Mediterranean cuisine with seasonal products prepared in an innovative way. The exceptional knowledge of our sommeliers contributes to perfect wine-food combinations and ensures you an unforgettable experience.
