World war II tour by helicopter and land

This Peninsula Academy brings to life the drama of the last stand of the combined Filipino and American defenders against the invading Japanese forces in World War II. Your journey begins when you take off from The Peninsula Manila’s helipad on a BELL-407 helicopter and take to the skies and cross Manila Bay to the rocky island fortress of Corregidor where a guide will take you on a private tour of the island onboard a 1940s tranvia (tram) and relive the history of major sites, their strategic importance and legacy.
Later in the morning, a Peninsula page will offer Champagne and canapés before the helicopter flies along the spectacular Cavite – Batangas coastline before descending into Taal lake and hovering over Taal volcano, one of the most geologically active environments in the Philippines. Then the coconut plantations ringing Taal lake open to reveal the hillside town of Tagaytay where the helicopter will land near Antonio’s restaurant for a garden lunch at one of Asia’s best restaurants. This is the perfect finish to the The “Spirit of Corregidor” tour before returning to The Peninsula Manila with enough memories to last a lifetime.

Hand embroidery art of the Philippines

The Philippines has a century-old tradition of hand embroidery. From the colourful cross-stitch patterns favoured by indigenous peoples of the lowlands, to the intricate callado filigree work where yarn is painstakingly pulled off from the cloth, it is considered to be one of the finest in embroidery in the world. The Peninsula Manila invites guests to the exclusive atelier of Lenora Cabili the designer of FILIP + INNA – a private clothing line of contemporary women’s wear inspired by the traditional weaving, embroidery, beading and patterns of the Philippine islands.
Spend an afternoon at the atelier of FILIP + INNA designer Lenora Cabili and discover how each piece she designs is handmade, or gawa sa kamay and why it’s her mission to revive and preserve the ancient traditions of the Philippines that are in danger of becoming lost. Over coffee, tea or Champagne and canapés served by a Peninsula Page, guests will enjoy a salon show featuring selected pieces from her latest collection which they may also purchase or have custom-fitted.

Appreciating the Philippine south sea pearl

As early as 600 years ago, for the entire Asian world, the Pearl Road led to the Philippines. Indeed, accounts about pearls as trade items go back 2,000 years, about as long as Chinese traders have been sailing down the Pearl Road to this archipelago in search of this precious gem. The Peninsula Academy Perlas: Appreciating the Philippine South Sea Pearl program will take guests on a one-day air and sea safari through one of the world’s greatest, largest and most prolific harvesting grounds yielding a natural treasure of the Philippines: the golden Philippine South Sea Pearl of extraordinary size and beauty.

Tour of the old walled city of intramuros

This Peninsula Academy brings to life nearly 400 years of Philippine history in a breezy three hours with some of Manila’s most accomplished, educated and interesting historians as your private tour guide. The tour starts in Fort Santiago, retracing the steps of Philippine National Hero Jose Rizal and in the process, providing a backdrop for a sometimes biting, oftentimes humourous but always incisively intelligent commentary on the Philippine psyche. The tour ends with either lunch or dinner at a 1930s Art Deco mansion.

Tour of the grand old houses of Taal Town

This Peninsula Academy relives the lifestyle, customs and traditions of a wealthy Filipino home during the Spanish colonial period. Your journey starts in Villa Tortuga, a restored 19th-century bahay na bato (stone house) whose owner will host you to a typical provincial lunch and then take you to visit the centuries-old Basilica of St Martin de Tours before finishing with merienda (Philippine afternoon tea) at Casa Villavicencio.

27 years of Philippine contemporary art

With a new dawn rising for Philippine contemporary art, The Peninsula Academy will arrange for curious minds or art enthusiasts like yourself to go on a private guided tour of Pinto Gallery, the Silangan Gardens and Pinto Art Museum. To make it a unique and lively experience, your tour starts at Pinto Gallery with refreshments served at Silangan Gardens.
From there, your guide will take you to the capilla (chapel) with its antique santos (saints) and then on a short walk down the hillside compound to the museum. The “Art in the Hills” tour comes to a close with a chilled glass of Deutz Peninsula Champagne in hand, as well as a greater appreciation for contemporary Philippine art.

Experience Philippine art, design and fashion

This programme will take you to a pretty and peaceful gated residential compound that houses the galleries and atelier of three Manila style setters – Albert Avellana (art), Eric Paras (interior design) and Jesus “Jojie” Lloren (fashion) – where you will be able to meet them in person and over lunch discuss trends and even buy or commission artworks, limited-edition furniture and couture designs.

A filipino crafts class for young people

This Peninsula Academy Programme is a wonderful introduction for budding artists to work with paper and fabric painting techniques. By the end of a two-hour class, young artists will have painted on a taka (papier-mâché molds shaped like people, horses and the Philippine water buffalo or kalabaw), a T-shirt or a canvas bag. They make lovely gifts of arts and crafts from the Philippines, made even more special by one’s labour of love.

Sweet cooking the filipino way for kids

Junior guests of The Peninsula Manila eager to learn the ABCs of easy-to-make Filipino desserts can join the class and learn how to make halo-halo which is a compound Tagalog (the Philippines’ national language) word for “mix-mix” because halo-halo means just that – to mix in a glass layers of cooked fruit, egg custard, pulses, shaved ice and ice-cream and eating it all with a spoon.

Jewellry by Wynn Wynn Ong

A combination of elegance and edge define the one-of-a-kind jewellery of Wynn Wynn Ong. If you want a departure from the norm and enjoy the experience of finding, owning and wearing new jewellery that is ultra-exclusive, this Peninsula Academy programme is tailor-made for you. Born in Burma and raised in Vienna and Manila, it was her privileged upbringing and travels from the age of two that formed her distinct sense of aesthetics. She originally started designing jewellery because she found none that she wanted to wear. Now her work is celebrated for its attention to detail and its craftsmanship.
A three-hour visit to her private studio will have you admire and appreciate the level of detail and personalisation that she demands of her craftsmen, a process that larger companies have forgotten in seeking shorter turnarounds and faster deliveries. Over coffee, tea or Champagne and canapés served by a Peninsula page, you may also purchase pieces or commission bespoke pieces for special occasions.

Plush toy-making class for young people

Spend a delightful couple of hours with Apol Lejano Massebieau and learn the delightful craft of plush toy making. Children from ages 5 to 12 are given blank plush toys in the shape of The Peninsula’s Peter Bear, sunburst, jeepney and many more designs made of white cotton. They will also be given colored pens, glue and fabric shapes. They draw on the plush toys. They doodle and color on them. They can stick on fabric, sprinkle glitter, paste stickers, to make a decoupage. Over a Peninsula children’s afternoon tea served by a Peninsula page, they will learn the thrill of becoming the proud creator and designer of their very own wonderful, unique plushie.
