Welcome to a true birder’s paradise. Described by Bird life International as «the most important site for biodiversity conservation in Rwanda,» the Nyungwe National Park is home to over 300 bird species, 27 of which are endemic to the local Albertine Rift. You’ll enjoy a mesmerising trail through the forest floor as bird song accompanies your every step, and your expert guide identifies birds by ear alone, from the elusive Rwenzori Turaco to the Grey-Chested Kakamega.

Karambe Trail

The perfect option for those seeking a more leisurely hike, this relatively flat, sparkling quartz trail begins in the open-air site of an original gold mine, market, and army camp, and leads through an area of low fern trees and young vegetation, the ideal conditions for spotting birds in Nyungwe.

Rukuzi Trail

This exhilarating hike is characterised by continuous open vistas on one side of the track, and the opportu- nity to spot chimps in their natural habitat. Lake Kivu and the islands of the Democratic Republic of Congo are visible early on, and as you descend the peak, listen out for the sounds of children playing as their voices carry up the mountainside from Banda village below.

One and Only Nyungwe House

One&Only Nyungwe House is located on the edge of the Nyungwe Forest National Park in Gisakura on a working tea plantation. The lodge has comfortable accommodation, top facilities and the benefit of having Nyungwe Forest — one of Africa’s largest and oldest mountain rainforests — right on its doorstep. Activities at the lodge mostly take place in the national park; guests can go chimpanzee, black-and-white colobus monkey, grey-cheeked mangabey, blue monkey, and golden monkey trekking. Various guided walks are available, including a swamp walk, waterfall walk, and bird watching walk.

Guests can also visit the nearby tea factory and nearby communities. Alternatively, relax at the poolside boma, swim in the pool while taking in the surrounding forest views or be pampered at the spa. 22 Luxury Rooms are spread between six wooden villas are on offer as well as two Presidential Suites, each in separate villas. All rooms are en-suite with private decks overlooking the forest and have air-conditioning, a fireplace, minibar, tea/coffee facilities, satellite TV, and Wi-Fi. Enjoy meals at the restaurant or dining area and drinks at the tea lounge and bar.

Small yet sumptuous is the key. The 22 rooms are arranged in five pods away from the main building, at the edge of the rainforest. Each has a forest-view balcony, lie-down-on-me-now four-poster bed, dark bamboo flooring and plenty of warm fabric on show. There’s a wood stove as well as air-conditioning. The bath is splendidly deep and there is a raft of Africology unguents to sample. A cloche of biscuits arrives at turn-down time and a rucksack is supplied for your hikes.

An excellent wine cellar leans heavily – and wisely – on South African varieties, but when it comes to drink, tea is the thing. Tea-tasting seminars explain the fermentation and drying process, as well as the finer points of taste. Food is exquisite, with pumpkin veloute and a piquant pineapple and broccoli salad the highlights during my stay. You don’t choose from a menu; instead chef Treasure Makwanise delivers a set meal each evening, with all due consideration to those with dietary requirements, and many ingredients drawn from his kitchen garden. Breakfast goes big on delicate egg-based hot dishes and sweet pastries from the buffet.
