ACTIVITIES:
There are two thrilling game drives every day: one in the morning and one in the afternoon. This is your opportunity to meet and photograph the incredible animals in the heart of their natural habitat.
Take a stroll in the bush with your ranger and follow the animal tracks, discover hundreds of intriguing plants and bushes, and learn about the tiniest creatures. You might even sneak up to a rhino on foot, which is a thrilling experience!
At night, your ranger will be your guide to the most astonishing sky, completely free from light pollution. You’ll see the beautiful constellations of the Southern Hemisphere and have an unspoilt view of the Milky Way, often with the odd satellite passing by.
Spend the afternoon by one of the peaceful dams, rod in hand, a picnic and refreshing drink by your side, most probably in the company of some curious hippos.
By arrangement, we can book a professional wildlife photographer to spend the day with you and show you how to take the best pictures in the most amazing setting! Photographic equipment is also available for hire, if required.
Shik Shack Tours offers you an experience like no other – grassroots, community- inspired village tours with a focus on social integration and passion for pro-poor tourism that will leave you dreaming of your African experience for years to come.
A ride in a hot air balloon gives you the opportunity to absorb the area in a beautifully unique way, with that extra element of adventure.
Fly over the bush in a microlight and view wildlife, waterfalls, canyons and other gorgeous scenery from the air.
The best way to see this spectacular region is from the air, so board a chopper and prepare to be stunned by the splendour and beauty of the scenery below you.
Famous throughout South Africa, this incredible, natural geological feature is 25 km long and about 750m deep, making it the third largest canyon in the world. The view is absolutely breath taking.

Makanyi Lodge opened its doors in June 2015 and we are now into our fourth year and what an amazing ride it’s been! Makanyi is located in the southern sector of the Timbavati, a place that has been dubbed as “The Place Where Something Sacred Came Down to Earth”. Indeed, Makanyi Lodge itself is a heavenly place and, what’s more, it couldn’t be better located. The Timbavati is an area of prime game viewing, home to the “Big Five” and a place to enjoy excellent sightings of the Wild Dogs, when they come through. We are in the Greater Kruger National Park, an area of over 2.4 million hectares in which animals roam freely and, being one of very few commercial lodges in this area, it is a truly wild, authentic and private experience . We are also lucky to be in proximity to many world-renowned attractions, which can enhance your stay even further, making your holiday here the experience of a lifetime.Part of the Greater Kruger National Park, the wildlife-rich Timbavati Private Nature Reserve borders the fence-free Kruger National Park, allowing wildlife to wander freely but without the jeep herds and the timetables. From your private terrace and over meals on the deck, you can spy on hippos, elephants and even white rhino at their own watering hole.
The guest accommodation at Makanyi consists of seven suites, including two honeymoon suites. All are constructed from wood, stone and thatch and overlook a nearby dam, a spectacular feature of the landscape. Each standard unit boasts a spacious double bed, bedside tables with lamps, a writing desk and chair, a lounge area including a cosy fireplace, and a private deck with relaxing sunloungers and an outdoor shower. The en-suite bathrooms comprise flush toilet, twin washbasins, shower and separate bathtub! There is also a mini bar, tea- and coffee-making facilities, a hairdryer, a telephone and complimentary Wi-Fi. The honeymoon suites are just as well appointed and include a romantic four-poster bed and a private plunge pool on the deck. They are positioned farthest from the main lodge, so honeymooning guests can enjoy ample privacy!

Luxury Suite
145sqm. Open plan flowing from bathroom to bedroom to lounge to deck. All suites have a terrace to relax and view the game which frequents the lodge grounds, and all have views of the permanent dam. Custom made furnishings, indoor& outdoor showers, free-standing bathtubs, lounge area with open fire for winter nights, sun loungers & day beds on the deck for lazy days, luxury bathroom amenities, mini bar & fridge, Tea & Coffee making facilities, ‘Nespresso’ coffee machine, WiFi and high speed internet access (bush technology permitting!), & in-room safe.

Private Villa
Makanyi Lodge is pleased to introduce the new private Villa! This new 2-bedroomed private escape sleeps a maximum of 4 guests, making it ideal for families, a groups of friends or two couples travelling together. It’s even ideal for just a couple looking for that extra privacy, flexibility and a more home from home feel. Set away from the main lodge and with 366m² of space (inclusive of a large outdoor deck), the Villa features two en-suite bedrooms, each with their own shower and separate freestanding bath, a dining room and kitchen, and a large living room with cable TV which opens on to a vast outdoor deck with its own Boma and private swimming pool. On the deck, guests can relax and unwind with a gin and tonic after an exhilarating day, and watch the sun set and the stars rise. In addition, guests of the Villa can also take advantage of their own private vehicle and safari guide, allowing you maximum flexibility and privacy.

The lodge
The Main Lodge is a perfect haven where you will find a superbly situated deck with stunning views of the dam, allowing you to unwind and watch amazing wildlife scenes unfold before your eyes. It is a lovely area to either relax on your own and take in the beauty of your surroundings or to socialise with others and share stories about your sightings. The sun loungers around the pool are perfect for sunbathing, reading or dozing, whilst our cozy loft serves as a quiet reading area. In the main area, there are large, comfortable sofas by the roaring fireplace to keep you warm on a chilly evening, whereas on a warm summer’s night, nothing beats sitting on the deck by the pool sipping a refreshing cocktail to the sounds of lions roaring nearby. Alternatively, mingle with other guests at the bar where the barman is ready to prepare you your favourite drink, and share stories of your day’s sightings.
Food and hospitality go hand in hand and at Makanyi. We want our guests to experience the spirit of South Africa and all the flavours it has to offer, whilst giving a nod to international cuisine so that guests feel they are at home away from home. Our food is all locally sourced and of the highest quality. The bush is a magical place that captures all your senses. With sensational sunrises and breathtaking sunsets, not to mention the exhilarating sightings, every sense is stimulated and we will ensure that you are always indulged in deliciously nutritious food that will give you the right energy to participate in exploring the amazing nature that surrounds you and will complement your overall Makanyi experience. From an intimate candlelit dinner under a galaxy of stars to a bush picnic or a romantic dinner in the privacy of your room, the only food rules we have are to delight your palate! We are also pleased to offer premium South African wines and a selection of international liqueurs and spirits.

Dining
A snack – homemade granola, freshly baked muffins – is served before the morning game drive, followed by a full-on breakfast – fruit, pastries, eggs all ways – when you arrive back. Lunch is a choice of daily-changing salads and pastas taken overlooking the watering hole, swiftly followed by high tea with homemade lemonade, iced tea and cakes before the afternoon outing. Dinner is à la carte, perhaps a succulent ostrich steak and sublime malva pudding under a star-studded African sky. And twice a week there’s communal dining around the campfire in the boma, including a Saturday night braai. Sundowners are served in the bush or at the lodge, and gin lovers will enjoy a tasting of local craft gins.
Back downstairs, all main areas flow out onto a deck incorporating Makanyi’s swimming pool, lots of sunloungers, and tables and chairs for outdoor dining. As well as all this, there is a spa, a fully equipped gym, and a curio shop selling an excellent range of souvenirs!
