ACTIVITIES:
Photography is a fairly individual pursuit. It demands time and patience as well as an indepth knowledge of local conditions and the subject, especially when your lens is trained on a wild creature. Keen photographers are often restrained on a general safari – they lack the freedom to stake out a waterhole for hours or wait patiently for a lion pride to catch up with a herd of buffalo. They often need a particularly experienced guide to keep them informed of the likely movement and behaviour of the wildlife they are observing. The perfect safari, from a photographer’s point of view, is one that balances patient observation of the details with a sharp eye for dramatic opportunities.
Find a quiet spot with your book or binoculars and watch birds in the garden and animals passing the lodge.
Game drives are conducted in the Sabi Sabi Reserve, a recognised ‘hot spot’ of biodiversity which makes for an astonishing variety of wildlife – including over 200 mammal and 300 bird species. Unforgettable day and night safaris are enjoyed in open safari vehicles with close encounters with the Big 5 being a regular occurrence. Environmental awareness walking safaris add an extra dimension to the bush experience, allowing a close-up look at the fascinating smaller creatures of the bushveld. Imagine the Africa of the great safari era, when blazing sunsets melted into lantern lit romance and service was an effortless whisper.
Walking safaris augment Africa’s other great on-foot experience – trekking holidays. A more mountain-based experience, trekking through lush rainforest for gorillas and chimps has become a must-do activity in Uganda, Rwanda and the Congo, while a multi-day Mount Kilimanjaro trek belongs at the top any adventurer’s bucket list.
We offer a Community Tour, available to Sabi Sabi guests after breakfast each day. This is to be pre-booked at an additional charge, and these funds are invested back into the community. The tour focuses on an authentic experience, and you will have the chance to view life from the perspective of our staff, as the majority of our staff are from the local communities of Lillydale, Justicia and Huntington.
A fly-in safari makes use of light aircraft to transfer you between locations within a safari destination, saving you time moving between attractions so that you can see and do more on your vacation. The best thing about flying from location to location – aside from the advantages of getting from point A to point B quickly and efficiently – is that you gain an aerial overview of the landscapes you will explore on the ground. Expect spectacular panoramas and the benefit of a better understanding of the wilderness you journey through – when your guide mentions the mountains that border the area, or the vastness of the plains, your aerial viewpoint gives you the full picture. A fly-in safari usually makes use of light aircraft, including single prop planes, and dirt landing strips. For nervous flyers, this is not the best way to explore Africa. But for most safari travellers, a fly-in safari has an added layer of thrill and excitement to the obvious advantages of seeing and doing more in less time.
