ACTIVITIES:
Photography is a fairly individual pursuit. It demands time and patience as well as an indepth knowledge of local conditions and the subject, especially when your lens is trained on a wild creature. Keen photographers are often restrained on a general safari – they lack the freedom to stake out a waterhole for hours or wait patiently for a lion pride to catch up with a herd of buffalo. They often need a particularly experienced guide to keep them informed of the likely movement and behaviour of the wildlife they are observing. The perfect safari, from a photographer’s point of view, is one that balances patient observation of the details with a sharp eye for dramatic opportunities.
Find a quiet spot with your book or binoculars and watch birds in the garden and animals passing the lodge.
Game drives are conducted in the Sabi Sabi Reserve, a recognised ‘hot spot’ of biodiversity which makes for an astonishing variety of wildlife – including over 200 mammal and 300 bird species. Unforgettable day and night safaris are enjoyed in open safari vehicles with close encounters with the Big 5 being a regular occurrence. Environmental awareness walking safaris add an extra dimension to the bush experience, allowing a close-up look at the fascinating smaller creatures of the bushveld. Imagine the Africa of the great safari era, when blazing sunsets melted into lantern lit romance and service was an effortless whisper…Welcome to Selati Camp.
Walking safaris augment Africa’s other great on-foot experience – trekking holidays. A more mountain-based experience, trekking through lush rainforest for gorillas and chimps has become a must-do activity in Uganda, Rwanda and the Congo, while a multi-day Mount Kilimanjaro trek belongs at the top any adventurer’s bucket list.
We offer a Community Tour, available to Sabi Sabi guests after breakfast each day. This is to be pre-booked at an additional charge, and these funds are invested back into the community. The tour focuses on an authentic experience, and you will have the chance to view life from the perspective of our staff, as the majority of our staff are from the local communities of Lillydale, Justicia and Huntington.

Imagine the Africa of the great safari era, when blazing sunsets melted into lantern lit romance and service was an effortless whisper. This is the Africa you will experience at Sabi Sabi’s Selati Camp, an award winning luxury game lodge in South Africa. During the 1870’s, high in the crevices of the Drakensberg escarpment which rises to the west of Sabi Sabi, gold was discovered. To transport the gold, the parliament of the Old Transvaal Republic commissioned a railway line from the interior to Delagoa Bay in Mozambique. A branch railway known as the Selati Line crossed the Sabi Sand Reserve. Today the line is disused but the old railbed can still be seen in the north-eastern section of Sabi Sabi, close to Selati Camp. Sabi Sabi’s intimate all-suite Selati Camp is an unforgettable African experiences. Born of history, inspired by the legends of hidden bullion and fearless hunters, the exquisite seven suite Selati Camp is a tangible reminder of this grand steam train era. Railway museums and storerooms yielded authentic memorabilia which have been artfully incorporated into the décor of this 5-star jewel of the bushveld, blending creatively with sumptuous furnishings, antiques and rich linens, to create Selati’s ambience and character of “Yesterday”. Each of the suites, romantically named after long-gone railway stations, is intimate and comfortable. “Out of Africa” styling, en-suite bathrooms, and cleverly concealed air-conditioning and electricity maintain the historical theme.
Selati Camp is one of the smallest camps in the Sabi Sabi Game Reserve and is made up of only seven luxury thatched suites, each with en suite bathrooms and private alfresco shower and outdoor bathtub. The beds are draped with romantic mosquito netting and at night the suites are lit with flickering oil lamps (although you can also switch the electric lights on if they are needed) while the verandas allow you to survey your own corner of Africa in private. It offers the perfect accommodation for travellers looking for a romantic luxury safari lodge in South Africa. Selati is furnished with a historic railway theme and is meticulously created as an authentic home in the bush. The railway theme extends from the original steam engine name plates, signals and shunter’s lamps lighting the way to your suite, to interesting memorabilia and other collector’s pieces in each suite.
