The Spa is a magical oasis of tranquillity cut into the surrounding rocks. Inside there are hot and cold plunge pools, a hydrotherapy bath and a floatation tank.
The décor in every room is different, from the duvet to the lampshades, as is the size and layout. The colour is broadly blues, greens, taupes and whites. All rooms are very comfortable, the kind you are happy to come home to, with all the usual five-star facilities – but some of them are a little over the top for my taste. Lots of them have fabrics matching the wallpaper, and a layered look places mirrors and artworks on patterned walls. Bathrooms feature tubs, showers, and double vanities – all top notch finishes. To ensure some kind of view I’d opt for one of the upstairs rooms (i.e. from numbers three or four), and maybe forego sea views and opt for a quieter mountain-facing room.

I’m not sure why Azure Restaurant isn’t a regular contender in the local top 10 dining awards. Aside from Christo Pretorius’ menu, it’s an opulent, romantic setting, with the sunset turning the whole restaurant gold. Christo Pretorius’ menu offers excellent seafood – when I visited, the fish of the day – always sustainable – was prepared in a brioche crust and served with poached mussels, baby bok choy, braised celery, wakame and dashi broth. The seafood platter has it all – West Coast crayfish, prawns, medium langoustines, fish-of-the-day, grilled baby calamari tubes, mussels cooked in a blonde lemon garlic sauce, with steamed basmati rice, side green salad and sauces. There isn’t a more decadent breakfast buffet in the city – everything you can imagine, plus speciality orders from the kitchen. The Café Grill offers more informal dining. The hotel also offers picnic baskets – order one and head over to Kirstenbosch’s shaded lawns.
