Under the benevolent gaze of three volcanoes, this recently restored former monastery embodies Arequipa’s traditional architecture by flaunting its original sillar volcanic rock walls, which were carefully sculpted by local stonemasons. On top of its colourful monasteries and grand cathedral, its cobblestone streets and limitless gastronomic heritage make for a perfectly picturesque destination. Arequipa has a year-round sunny climate with barely any rainfall and day temperatures ranging from 10°c to 25°c that will drop after sunset. From January to March, Arequipa has a mild rainy season, but April until December are as good as rainless. At 2328 m above sea level, Arequipa reveals spectacular scenery and is the perfect gateway to acclimatise to the altitude before continuing on to the higher destinations.
