ACTIVITIES:
The guided tour of the Dunkeld Tea Factory is the quintessential tea experience. Our resident Tea specialist passionately delves into all aspects of tea in just the right amount of detail – from a look back to the early days of “planting” and the lifestyles of the early colonial settlers, to the manufacturing process, to how flavours are created to suit various palates – he’s got it covered. In the evenings, gain a rare and exclusive insight in to a centuries-old art form that has shaped a global industry. Learn about the art of tea tasting through this interactive and guided experience where guests will taste multiple teas under the guidance of their expert host. During the experience, you will learn (and try for yourself) how professional tea tasters identify (and appreciate!) the unique flavour profiles that give different teas their distinction.
There’s more to Ulagalla than the view from your hotel room. Wake up as the sun rises to the sweet chorus of the birds and take a guided walk around the estate and beyond. This leisurely 60-minute nature walk in Anuradhapura includes a walk along the banks of Wannemaduwa Tank, a traditional irrigation reservoir designed and built over 2,000 years ago.
Take to the waters of the Wannemaduwa Tank in a kayak at dawn or dusk, to experience the breathtaking wildlife at a time when it’s most active. Paddle quietly with your friendly staff guide through floating islands of lotus, strands of water reeds, and overhanging boughs. The soft light of the rising or setting sun makes for a picturesque setting for this excursion offered by our Anuradhapura resort.
Discover the humble simplicity of Sri Lankan village life with this two-hour guided bicycle excursion. Keep an eye open for exotic birds and small wildlife along the route – expect surprises on one of the best Sri Lankan bike tours! Your destination is Veheragalla, a traditional farming village not far from the hotel.
If you prefer riding on horseback, you can spend an hour or so exploring the estate and neighbourhood on horseback with a staff groom. We also offer longer Sri Lankan horse riding excursions through prior arrangement.
For the nature-loving gourmet: we offer a guided tour of Sri Lankan organic farming and of our organic herb and vegetable garden, during which you can pick fresh, juicy fruits and vegetables for your lunch. End your walk with a visit to our traditional hearth kitchen, where the herbs and vegetables you’ve selected will be transformed into delicious Sri Lankan dishes especially for you.
Surrounded by the birds and the trees of Ulagalla, we offer exclusive archery excursion in Sri Lanka. We even supply the equipment – bows, arrows, and targets – and expert advice as well as some friendly competition from our recreational assistants, who are graduates of the Colombo School of Archery. You may even engage in a tournament with your own party or fellow guests.
All over South Asia, children, as well as adults, engage in the popular pastime of making and flying kites. This is one of Sri Lanka’s favourite pastimes. Learn how to craft, launch, and fly a bamboo and paper kite of classic Sri Lankan design – naisarungal (cobra kite), wowla (fruit bat), or monara (peacock). These designs are not just cosmetic but offer different attributes in the air as well. The fruit bat, for example, is the easiest to make but the hardest to control in the air while the peacock is the exact opposite. This is one of the most unique activities available at Anuradhapura’s luxury resorts.

Ceylon Tea Trails comprises of five restored historic tea planter bungalows, perched at an altitude of 1250 meters in Sri Lanka’s panoramic Ceylon tea region. Each bungalow is unique and offers guests large pools with gorgeous views and a private house ambiance that is the hallmark of the award-winning Tea Trails experience. Follow the Tea Trail from one bungalow to the next, staying a night or two at each or just laze in one. ‘No Menus, Just indulgences’ is our philosophy. The island’s first Relais & Chateaux lodge brings a mix of delicate fine dining and the gastronomic passion of local cuisine to the charm of colonial tea plantation bungalows.
This is the ideal setting for trekking and biking against the breathtaking backdrop of mountains, lakes, winding roads and waterfalls. If you prefer to unwind, observe life on a working tea estate while being pampered by your butler, enjoy a spa treatment, croquet on the lawn or sunbathe alongside the pool. Or climb holy mountain Adams Peak, explore the lush tea fields & visit a century old factory for a gentle education in the art of Ceylon Tea. The complementary guided tour of Dilmah Tea’s Dunkeld Tea Factory is the quintessential tea experience in Sri Lanka. Ceylon Tea Trails is made up of five colonial-era tea-planters’ bungalows, scattered around Castlereagh Lake. Flaunting heritage style, each features graceful top-tier Master Suites, Garden Suites and Luxury Rooms, and comes with its own manager, chef, butler and house boys. Each of the five bungalows boast refreshingly au naturel outdoor pools: mountain spring-fed and unheated, fringed by cushioned teak loungers aplenty. Breezy Tientsin’s stylish infinity pool can be bracing, but is the best of the bunch, set in a clandestine upper-terrace garden for maximum privacy and minimum mozzies. Norwood’s pool comes with the most expansive views for sublime swimming. Castlereagh has the smallest pool, flanked by a Scottish ‘loch’ and tea hills, so suits dilettante dippers who prefer plunging and lounging.
Rooms are named after tea planters who lived in the bungalow. They offer a taste of colonial-era luxury with solid teak furnishings, antique touches and plush beds. Master Suites with a separate living room, Garden Suites with verandahs to private gardens and Luxury Rooms of great character. A secluded Owner’s Cottage. Relax in immense four-poster beds, crisp white sheets. Twenty-six elegant and charming rooms and suites decorated each in a unique style, ranging from neo-colonial to classic English. A dedicated butler service will be available to guests from dawn to dusk to ensure that no request is too much trouble. Guests are treated to traditional morning ‘Bed Tea’ to start the day in style.

Luxury Rooms
Luxury Rooms average 40 square metres and offer an impeccably appointed bedroom with king or twin beds, elegant bathroom with twin vanities, a bath & walk-in rain shower. Lounge by the window and enjoy your favourite book or ring up your butler for some soothing afternoon tea.

Garden Suites range average 50 square metres and offer a gracefully furnished bedroom with four poster king bed, a luxurious bathroom with twin vanities, a bath & walk in rain shower and a private garden.

Master Suites
Master Suites range average 70 square metres and offer a king bed, a separate exquisitely furnished living room, lavish bathroom with twin vanities, a bath & walk in rain shower and a private garden.

Owners Cottage
The Owner’s Cottage at Dunkeld bungalow is a romantically secluded standalone bungalow with lake views, heated outdoor hot tub, master bedroom with king bed, beautifully furnished living room and verandah.
‘No Menus, Just indulgences’ is our philosophy. The island’s first Relais & Chateaux lodge brings a mix of delicate fine dining and the gastronomic passion of local cuisine to the charm of colonial tea plantation bungalows.
The day at Tea Trails starts with that wonderful colonial institution, Bed Tea. Served by your butler as part of a gentle wake-up call, this must be the most civilised way to start the day. The butler will also draw your bath. Then an early morning walk followed by an English or Sri Lankan breakfast. A unique aspect of Tea Trails’ cuisine is the use of fresh, home grown vegetables, herbs and teas from the surrounding estates. Basil, rosemary, thyme, tarragon, sage, parsley and mint inspire and enliven the chef’s menus every day.
Tea Trails is all about the time-honoured planters’ traditions: Roaring fires and the comfort of a single malt whisky while the mists roll in or a stiff gin and tonic after a long day’s walk in the tea gardens, accompanied by the spicy flavours of Sri Lankan nibbles to stimulate the appetite. Scrumptious afternoon cream teas in gardens curiously English and exotic at the same time. A four-course dinner that is at once contemporary and colonial with its garden-fresh ingredients married with choice wines, best shared in good company. Or a fabulously aromatic, authentic Sri Lankan rice and curry for lunch – a definite harbinger of the afternoon siesta.
Rates at Tea Trails are fully inclusive of gourmet meals and drinks, including select top shelf spirits and wines. Even service charges, taxes and limited laundry are included. We won’t bother you with bills.

Afternoon Cream Tea
A Tea Trails ritual; delicious savouries and cakes served by your butler, accompanied by yesterday’s Ceylon tea manufacture. Whether you put clotted cream or jam first on your scone is your hardest decision.

Tea Planter's Picnic Lunch
In the early days of the tea industry, before motorized travel came to its assistance, tea planters conducted field inspections across a vast area of tea fields and forest, either on foot or horseback. At mid-day, they would take a break under the shade of a tree or the shelter of a makeshift hut for lunch and a rest. The “Planters’ Lunch” is a plusher, four-course version (to Relais and Chateaux standards no less!) served in tiffin boxes in a picnic setting.
The location is on the hillside above Dunkeld Bungalow flanked by tea and jungle on either side, with vistas of the rolling tea fields that start from the glassy Castlereagh Lake and creep up on to jagged mountaintops. The way up to the picnic spot is via a scenic trail that commences at Dunkeld Bungalow and we recommend guests take the walk either up to the picnic spot or from lunch back down to the Bungalow. We also offer a “hosted” version of this experience in the company of our resident planter Bernard Holsinger, who can provide a fascinating account of life as a planter in the “good old days” to give richer context to the experience.

Tea Infused Dinner
Bringing together the subtle influences of the flavours of tea (not to mention the health benefit), the Tea Infused Dinner is a signature culinary experience unique to Tea Trails. Teas grown in various areas of Sri Lanka have distinctly different flavour profiles, and each lends a different effect to types of ingredients and methods of preparation.

Sri Lankan Cooking Master Class
A hands on experience with one of our amazing Tea Trails chefs. Learn the basics of Sri Lankan cooking, from the range of spices and ingredients, to techniques and recipes behind the magic of Sri Lankan cuisine. Guests are invited to get hands on with mixing spices, preparation and cooking to immerse themselves in this fun and sensory experience. An Ideal prelude to a full Sri Lankan dinner option that night.
A butler for each house, library of books and DVDs, free WiFi throughout, gardens, clay tennis court, croquet lawns, guest bikes, picnic baskets to order.
The complementary guided tour of Dilmah Tea’s Dunkeld Tea Factory is the quintessential tea experience in Sri Lanka.
