Dating from 1905, Hotel Villa Honegg re-opened in 2011 after a three-year refit that saw its shingle-clad façade restored to its Art Nouveau glory, and its interior gutted to make way for an opulent haven in cream, toffee, gold and sienna. Award-winning London designers Jestico + Whiles have used texture to spectacular effect: wood, leather, stone, velvet and brocade conjure up Alpine retreat at its most luxurious. Huge mountainscapes from a local gallery complete the look. Dramatically sited art nouveau-style mansion-hotel built in 1905, perched 3,000 feet above sea level overlooking Lake Lucerne.
Elegant public areas include atmospheric lounge with a log-burning fireplace and clubby leather couches and armchairs. A panoramic terrace offers stupendous lake views. The 23 luxurious guest accommodations are decorated in a restrained style and feature king-size beds, sitting areas, small work desks and baths with Hermès toiletries; most come with furnished balconies or terraces. Indoor-outdoor restaurant serves seasonal gourmet dishes employing locally sourced ingredients. Wellness facility with heated outdoor pool available year-round, Finnish sauna, steam bath, Technogym fitness center, range of spa treatments and indoor pool with underwater music.
Each of Honegg’s 23 rooms and suites is unique in size, palette and view — some overlook the lake, others the mountains, while the corner suites boast 180-degree balconies. But all should come with a warning: you will never want to leave. There is opulent luxury throughout, with feathered leather headboards that mimic the building’s façade; cream cowhide rugs atop polished wood flooring; and palatial marble bathrooms — think gilded mirrors, huge bathtubs and neat arrangements of Hermès toiletries. Top-floor rooms don’t have balconies, but it hardly matters — open the windows and inhale the clean air, and sleep like that if you like, free from noise and light pollution.
The Master Suite is not only the largest suite at the Hotel Villa Honegg – it’s also the most exclusive. Alongside the comfortable king-size bed, it incorporates a cosy living area, a separate dressing room and a spacious bathroom with views. The layout offers plenty of privacy amid the suite’s 93 m2. The balcony with its views of the lake is lovely and sunny in fine weather.
The Corner Suites are furnished with an eye for detail and comfort. Alongside the bedroom and its comfortable king-size bed, the 51 m2 suites offer a separable lounge area with a separate WC. The Corner Suites are available with a terrace offering views of the lake or a balcony with views of the mountains.

The Dépendance (annexe) is right next to the Villa Honegg and benefits from a meeting room with lounge area, a kitchen, and a suite for two persons on the first floor. The rooms are furnished differently from the hotel itself and are not in the latter’s 5* Superior category. The Dépendance is linked to the hotel via the underground garage.
The wainscoted restaurant is lovely, but dine on the terrace if weather permits. Here, you can see where your dinner comes from: the butcher is across the meadow, and almost all produce hails from the canton. The restaurant has been awarded 14 Gault Millau points, and the dishes are understated and beautifully cooked. The chicken with pesto tomatoes is melt-in-your-mouth. The à la carte breakfast, served until 2pm, includes freshly squeezed juices, as well as exquisite bircher muesli and poached eggs on toast. During the day, Honegg is popular with hikers for its house cream cake.
