One of the city’s favorite family attractions during wintertime is the Dolder Eisbahn, an open-air ice-skating rink where, for a very affordable daily rate, you can rent skates and skate figure eights on the large ice rink that often welcomes local hockey teams. Access to the rink is free for hotel guests, so you’ll just have to pay to rent skates. The atmosphere is particularly magical at night, when a giant Christmas tree dazzles in the center, teens hold hands and flirt, and people gather rink-side at a cozy cafe for mulled wine and hot chocolate.
From the northern tip of the Zürichsee, the Limmat River starts its brief journey to the Aare and, ultimately, to the Rhine—and it neatly bisects Zürich at the starting gate. The city is crisscrossed by lovely, low bridges. On the left bank are the Altstadt, the grander, genteel pedestrian zone of the old medieval center; the Zürich Hauptbahnhof, the main train station; and Bahnhofplatz, a major urban crossroads and the beginning of the world-famous luxury shopping street, Bahnhofstrasse.
Many of Zürich’s designer boutiques lie hidden along the narrow streets between Bahnhofstrasse and the Limmat River. Quirky bookstores and antiques shops lurk in the sloping cobblestone alleyways leading off Niedorfstrasse and Oberdorfstrasse. The fabled Bahnhofstrasse—famous because it’s reputedly the most expensive street in the world—is dominated by large department stores and extravagantly priced jewelry shops.
With direct access to the Adlisberg forest, the Dolder Grand is the ideal starting point for all kinds of outdoor activities. Among other things, our personal trainers offer outdoor boot camps, running, mountain biking, outdoor obstacle coursesand outdoor yoga.

The 175 rooms are as tranquil as the location. A neutral palette with splashes of lilac or tonal oranges composes a harmonious scene set with low-slung furniture in natural textures like leather, dark oak and linen. The rooms in the Norman Foster wings are sleek and bright thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows, but those in the main building ooze opulence, with lavishly patterned headboard panels. For pizazz, there are four ‘top suites’, including one in the central tower and another painted black and pink and named after London’s 100 Club. Balconies are standard in double rooms, alongside coffee machines, rarefied chocolate truffles handmade by fine dining chef Heiko Nieder and technology including automatic blackout and sun blinds and square Bang & Olufsen televisions.Beds are big and pillow-soft, while bathrooms throughout are excellent: clad in white marble or sand-coloured Jura limestone, they have bathrobe warmers, Kerstin Florian toiletries and showers with side jets. Some also have whirlpool bathtubs with candles and a view. Those with a lake view are best, but the rooms overlooking the golf course and woodland have a forest hideaway feel.

For breakfast, the kids can order pancakes, cereals, eggs and the like.

The hotel’s wellness facilities are sleek and beautiful, but the indoor pool hardly begs for Marco Polo-playing kids — only children ages 12 and up are allowed in the wellness area and indoor pool. But at a smaller property, the Dolder Waldhaus (a four-minute walk away), there’s a nice indoor pool that’s great for family swimming.
