From December to May, we are perched on the edge of the short grass plains – a perfect vantage point over the vast space where the herds amass to give birth to their young. Nestled in a well-watered wood, ancient trails weave the migration right through our camp.

  • 1.8 million wildebeest giving birth to 3-400,000 calves in the space of 3-4 weeks, plus all the predators that follow this movable feast.
  • Access to the popular Ndutu zone, as well as the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
  • Cheetah are particularly prolific, prowling around the herds of herbivores on the alert for opportunities to seize an easy meal! Other species in the area include hyena, jackal, and honey badger.
  • The birdlife is pretty impressive too, with hundreds of species such as the smart secretary bird and the rare Fischer’s lovebird and grey-crested helmet-shrike.

Kusini is set in the Serengeti National Park, on the edge of the short-grass plains within lush woodland. The spreading limbs of tall acacia trees yield plenty of cool shade, for the mess tent and guest tents alike. Guest accommodation at Kusini consists of six tents. Each has a private veranda, perfect for taking in amazing views across the Serengeti plains. Inside, there is a large wrought-iron double bed, bedside tables with lamps, a writing desk and chair, a tea-and-coffee station, and plenty of storage space. Here too, Moroccan rugs bring interest to otherwise neutral tones! The en-suite facilities of each camp comprise flush toilet, wooden washstand with basin and mirror, and classic bucket shower.

The word ‘Serian’ is Maasai for ‘serene’, chosen to capture the peaceful experience of staying at the camps, surrounded by the sights, smells, and sounds of nature. Serian’s Serengeti Mobile – as its name suggests – is a movable camp, and was created to make the most of the spectacular wildebeest migration. From December to May, we are perched on the edge of the short grass plains – a perfect vantage point over the vast space where the herds amass to give birth to their young. Nestled in a well-watered wood, ancient trails weave the migration right through our camp.

The seclusion of the camp means that you are free to have the run of the place. Comprising just 4 tents, and 2 suites the peaceful intimacy lends itself to exclusive bookings, or groups accompanied by private guides. Though it’s a mobile camp, its furnishings and creature comforts are much the same as Serian’s Serengeti South – with flushing toilets and bucket showers in an en suite bathroom, enormous wrought-iron beds, Moroccan rugs, and all the trimmings make it simplistically elegant and comfortable.

Tents

The six double tents at Kusini are strung along the woodland. Structures are canvas and mesh with fold-away flaps and a small shady patio to make the most of the views across the plains. Even though the entire camp is movable, the tents are smartly furnished with Moroccan rugs, local baskets and embroidered pillows. Each also has a wrought-iron double bed or two twin beds, writing desk, tea and coffee station and hanging closet. The ensuite bathrooms have flush toilets, a solid wooden basin and a bucket shower.

The dining area has a large wooden table and directors’ chairs, providing a social environment for meals. There is also space outside the mess tent to sit and relax, enjoying the wildlife go by!

Children of all ages are welcome and the relaxed nature of the camp make it a great choice for families. Early meals can be arranged on request and there is a family suite comprising two separate tents joined by a comfortable communal living space. With the camp’s strategic location on an ancient migratory path, animals are free to wander through and although they are unlikely to approach tents or humans, children must remain under parental supervision at all times.
