ACTIVITIES:
Enjoy twice daily game drives from Namiri Plains with the knowledgeable guides. Study and photograph the big cats of the area at your leisure, and absorb the extraordinary sight of massive herds of wildebeest appearing to take over the plains. All vehicles are open-sided and have power points where you can charge your devices, and are fitted with fridges to keep your drinks perfectly chilled.
Walking is the most intimate way to experience the bush; the pace is comfortable, your eye-level is that of the wildlife, and your senses are more acutely aware of the sights, smells and sounds. Walking safaris must be booked in advance.
Search for cheetah on the open plains of the Serengeti and meet up with the local cheetah researcher to compare notes and learn more about these endangered big cats.
Balloon safaris are a romantic and iconic way to experience the wilderness of East Africa, as you fly silently over the plains teeming with herds of wildlife in the early morning. Typically, a balloon safari begins around 6am and lasts for around 1-2 hours. Balloon safaris (additional cost) in the Serengeti take off from designated sites in the nearby Seronera area. The safari is followed by a champagne breakfast in the bush, a fitting end to a memorable flight over the wild.

Tucked away in a grove of fever trees and offering breath-taking views over the sweeping plains, Namiri Plains is an intimate tented camp in the central Seronera, which is known as one of the most reliable game-viewing areas within Serengeti National Park. It is a safe haven for cheetah, which can be seen in unsurpassed numbers on daily game drives. In Swahili, ‘Namiri’ translates to ‘big cat’ and this exclusive camp in the eastern corner of the Serengeti undoubtedly offers East Africa’s best cheetah viewing opportunities as well as sightings of serval, aardwolf and endangered pangolin. Namiri offers a superior level of comfort and has a remote location – more than an hour’s drive from any other camps.
Its stunning location also affords front-row seats to nature’s most dramatic spectacle – the Wildebeest Migration – when hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra make the annual pilgrimage in search of fresh grazing. This fascinating journey is made even more thrilling by the abundance of predators hot on the heels of the migrating game, providing you the opportunity to witness them stalking and hunting their prey. Highly skilled ranger-and-tracker teams guide daily drives through the acacia-dotted wilderness, inviting you to experience the Serengeti through their eyes. Aside from these intriguing wildlife encounters, relish in simple pleasures such as breakfast on Soit Le Motonyi rock while watching the sun rise majestically, or enjoying a sundowner atop the Barafu Kopjes.
10 spacious guest tents including one family tent, all with en suite bathrooms. The guest room walls are built from calcrete, the pale sedimentary rock that lies just below the grasslands of the eastern and southern Serengeti, created by millions of years of ash deposits from the Ngorongoro volcanoes. The calcrete not only lends its lovely grey-and-white colouring to the rooms’ aesthetic, but also provides natural temperature control, keeping them cool during the day and warm at night. Each of the ten guest tents features sliding mesh doors leading onto a large private veranda, complete with an al fresco bathtub cleverly screened from view by the stretch canvas roof.

Guest Tent
This small and exclusive haven comprises nine elegant tented suites with sweeping 360-degree views of the plains. Six of the tents can be doubles or twins with king-sized beds and décor in muted tones. The spacious en-suite bathrooms have flushing toilets and hot running water in both the indoor and outdoor showers.

Family Tent
Similar to the double tents but slightly larger, the family tent allows for two extra beds to be made up to accommodate a family.
Namiri Plains’ communal lounge and dining areas occupy the centre of the site, both boasting spectacular vistas over savanna and woodlands. In common with the guest rooms, they contain fairly plain furnishings on a palette of neutrals and splashes of blue. In the lounge tent, wood- or metal-framed well-cushioned sofas and chairs are placed around coffee tables, and the bar stocks a good selection of spirits, beers, and wines. Maps of the Serengeti adorn the walls, and there’s a handy battery charging station as well as a few books. The veranda is set with campaign chairs and occasional tables, as is the porch of the dining tent.

Dining Tent
Everyone eats together in the dining tent – whether for buffet breakfasts and lunches or formal dinners – and guests often tuck in to al fresco meals. Pre-dinner drinks are enjoyed around the campfire, which is also the setting for general socialising and swapping safari stories! As the camp is very open, it isn’t unusual for guests to hear big game trundling by.
Drawing inspiration from the nearby Olduvai Gorge (one of the most important paleoanthropological sites in the world), the communal areas of Namiri Plains centre around the Fossil Bar and a curated exhibit about the big cats for which this area is famous. Decking extends from the lounge and dining areas, featuring spotting scopes to observe visiting wildlife coming to drink at the Ngare Nanyuki river that runs in front of camp. The swimming pool provides the perfect spot in which to relax after lunch or cool off after a walking safari, and offers a romantic waterside setting for a private dining experience. A spa completes the camp’s offering and ensures our guests can fully unwind after their adventures on safari. Evenings are spent around the campfire sharing stories with other guests before a three-course dinner is served.
