Spend an afternoon touring the inlets, coves and lagoons around Phang Nga Bay by boat and sea canoe. Using a company called John Gray Sea Canoes, we have lunch on board the main motorboat as we make the journey to the limestone formations that make up Hong and Phanak Islands. There are four or five different locations where the boat then stops to allow you to slip into a canoe. Paddled by a professional guide, you can experience the mangrove forests, bat colonies and enormous mineral deposits. There is time for a swim before dinner on board.
Our half- and full-day game fishing tours set out in the morning from Chalong Bay to the Racha Islands where we troll for bait fish. These islands are also home to pristine coral bays, and there will be an opportunity for a spot of snorkeling. After a gourmet lunch on-board, we will switch our focus to big game fishing. Popular catches include sailfish, wahoo and mahi-mahi. Itineraries can be customised for private charters.
COMO Beach Club provides guests with a true beach vacation experience on an intimate private swathe of sand. It is only a 40-minute journey from COMO Point Yamu. Each day, we arrange a shuttle transfer to the pier before the hotel’s private boat sails to COMO Beach Club.
The Phuket ATV Tour Company is based a 10-minute drive from Point Yamu. It offers one- or two-hour tours of the island in all-terrain vehicles (ATVs). You can experience the jungles, mangroves and plantations up close, and head up and down mud pits for an adrenaline rush with a difference. Expect to get very muddy during the tour. Co-drivers must be aged eight or older. You must be aged 16 or over to drive your own ATV. You have a short training session first, on gravel laps. Note a photographer will be on hand to take pictures, which you can purchase after you finish.
The Gibbon Rehabilitation Project is located by the Bang Pae entrance to Khao Pra Theaw Nature Park, 15 minutes from Point Yamu by car. Many gibbons are killed and captured every year across Thailand, sold as pets or used to attract tourists. The centre saves gibbons from captivity in an effort to rehabilitate them, find them mates and eventually release them back into protected wildlife areas. There are four species of gibbon native to Thailand, all listed as endangered species. On this trip, guests also get to take a dip at the pretty Bang Pae Waterfall, where you can enjoy a picnic prepared by our COMO chefs.
Pristine reefs surround the Andaman Sea, home to some of the richest marine life and most remarkable coral structures in the world. Sharks, scorpion fish, manta rays and colourful reef fish abound. All divers are required to hold an international SCUBA diving license, which you will be asked to provide together with your logbook. A range of diving courses are also available at COMO Point Yamu for those wishing to qualify for a diving license.
This informal class is run by our award-winning COMO chefs at Point Yamu’s Nahmyaa restaurant. Throughout the three-hour session, learn about Thai cuisine and cooking methods while becoming familiar with an array of fresh and exotic produce, including local herbs and spices. You learn how to prepare four classic Thai dishes: pad Thai, tom yum, green curry and green papaya salad. Your teacher explains what the ingredients are and how to traditionally prepare them. After cooking, you sit down with your classmates to enjoy your creations. The recipes are presented in a COMO booklet for you to take home.
COMO Beach Club on a small island in the Andaman Sea offers more than daybeds and treatment salas. Active guests can also enjoy kayaking, snorkelling and stand-up paddleboarding – using the Beach Club’s complimentary watersports equipment. We also offer a safe, roped-off area of beach that is ideal for introducing young children to ocean swimming for the first time.
Thai Boxing, or Muay Thai, is one of Thailand’s strongest traditions, with a recorded history in the region dating back to the 16th century. Successful boxers become huge celebrities in Thailand but for many it is a fun and intense workout. Muay Thai is sometimes referred to as ‘the art of the eight limbs’ because it trains the use of hands, elbows, knees and shins to strike opponents. Requiring serious core engagement, Muay Thai provides a well-rounded workout and good cardio training.
Motoring out to the Khai Islands on a Thai long-tail boat from Yamu Pier takes about 45 minutes. Your first stop is the idyllic atoll of Khai Nui, which is circled by reefs teeming with clownfish, eels and giant clams.
The next destination is Khai Nok. Just up from the island’s beautiful beaches you’ll find a seafood market. Choose your catch and see it grilled on an open BBQ, enjoying a beer or glass of wine on the shoreline. Those looking for further snorkelling opportunities can explore the hidden edge of the island, or for something more active on the waves, there’s a chance to rent jet skis.
At COMO Point Yamu, you can enjoy a three-hour sunset cruise on our fully staffed motor boat, Capricorn II. Groups of up to 10 people can relax on the upper deck or in a saloon style galley as the boat glides through the water.
After the captain’s welcome, you can relax with a range of light canapés, soft drinks and wines, as the boat begins its voyage from Ao Por Marina to Naka Yai Island, passing Yao Noi and Yao Yai islands, the COMO Beach Club and Ko Phae, before returning to the resort.
Phang Nga Bay also commands an interesting cultural history. Rock paintings on several islands date back a thousand years or more. In the bay’s northern reaches, there is a community of ‘Sea Gypsies’ who live largely afloat (the mosque is the only construction on solid ground).
All this can be experienced by chartering your own boat, from a long-tail boat, to larger vessels ranging from a 28ft sports cruiser to a 76ft motor yacht. These larger charters come with cabins to relax in. They are equipped on and below deck for entertainment. Each is fully crewed, with staff numbers dependent on the boat’s size.
