The Bamboo Bar
From its humble beginnings in 1953 in what is now Khun Ankana’s Study in the heart of the hotel’s renowned Authors’ Wing, the Bamboo Bar has grown in status and reputation to become a beloved Bangkok institution frequented by jazz lovers and A-listers from around the world, as well as Thailand’s high society, who appreciate its distinguished décor and seductive glamour. The beverage and spirits concept has been created by Mandarin Oriental’s award-winning mixologist team, with Bamboo Bar originals retaining their signature status on the cocktail list alongside classics mixed according to their original recipes. The Bamboo Bar’s newest cocktail menu is called ‘Compass’, which draws inspiration from Thailand’s five regions, celebrating each one’s distinctive tastes in food, drink and lifestyle. Kinu by Takagi
Chef Takagi Kazuo of the two-Michelin-starred Kyoto Cuisine Takagi brings the elevated Kaiseki dining experience to the Thai capital for the first time. His composed, delicate and expressive dishes, offering his refined Kyoto-style cuisine, known as ‘Kyo-ryori’, reflect the seasons and cultures of both Japan and Thailand. He skillfully integrates a number of local Thai ingredients alongside the finest Japanese produce. The 10-seat restaurant will offer Kaiseki dining, the sophisticated and elegant iteration of Japanese cuisine that is a true expression of culinary skill and experience. As with Omakase dining, guests leave themselves in the hands of the chef as he creates a 10-course seasonal menu that is an elegant celebration of Japanese aesthetics.
In two nightly seatings, the culinary journey starts with a welcome drink served in a Japanese-styled Minka area, before diners are led to the counter where the real theatre begins. Here they witness the chef, a true master, at work. Guests may also choose to enjoy one of Bangkok’s finest sake collections, and the dining experience concludes with a tea ceremony.
The Authors' Lounge
The Authors’ Lounge is located on the ground floor of the original Oriental Hotel and exudes old world charm reminiscent of the early 1900s. Turn-of-the-century style wicker furniture and hand-painted fabrics provide the perfect accompaniment to framed photographs of many of the famous writers who have stayed at the hotel since the late nineteenth century.
