There are 30 main rooms in the central mansion house, and a further 40 rooms split across cottages and stables. All are different, but are deeply cosseting, and have the same earthy tones and horse motifs as the public spaces. Features could include a four-poster bed with posts shaped like branches, copper roll-top bathtubs and plump velvet chaise longues. The Dower House, a private, Grade II-listed, three-bedroomed cottage is also available. Big TVs invite films from the DVD collection (ask at reception), while Nespresso machines, filtered water and teas complete the set.

The Dower House is a private cottage built in 1775. Grade II listed, it has been immaculately restored by Fox Lindon Associates who have honoured the legacy of the property’s Georgian history and origins. A stylish and enchanting English country escape. The bespoke, copper roll-top bathtubs take luxury to new heights. Your bathrooms are wonderfully spacious, filled with natural light and fragranced by the subtle aroma of Mitchell and Peach toiletries.

Dine at crisp white tables underneath a copper halo sculpture at the restaurant, which serves up modern, local British fare with French inflections, such as marinated langoustines and pork belly, Exmoor caviar, British wagyu beef and braised turbot. Service is whip-sharp, though steep prices befit its Michelin-starred status (three courses for £70; tasting menu £95 without wine pairings). Breakfast in the main dining room is a smooth affair – no buffet here, just plates served straight to your table. Go for the Country Breakfast, which begins with a pastry basket, toast, freshly squeezed juice and tea/coffee, and is followed up with a hot dish of your choosing (smoked Manx kippers, pancakes, eggs anyway).

Coworth Park is the only hotel in Britain to have its own polo club and fields, which has a programme of tournaments. There’s also an equestrian centre with stables for 30 horses. The hotel has a partnership with nearby Wentworth Golf Club. The spa sits in timber and glass building, topped with a ‘living roof’ of thyme and lavender and set into the side of a hill. Facilities include a blue-lit pool with underwater music, steam rooms, mood showers and a gym. There are eight light-filled treatment rooms which offer a nicely edited treatment list by the likes of Carol Joy London, Kerstin Florian and Aromatherapy Associates. The Spatisserie serves up light lunch snacks such as salads and wraps.
