Great Plains Conservation Sapi Explorers Camp Exterior

The 120,000-hectare private Sapi Concession was awarded to Great Plains Conservation to manage and look after in 2016 and was immediately converted to operating as a private photographic reserve. This amazing wildlife sanctuary, along with the neighbouring Mana Pools National Park, now comprise over 337,000 hectares of prime protected wilderness. Collectively they form part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site as well as the core of the Middle-Zambezi Biosphere Reserve. Sapi Explorers Camp, perfectly located along the Zambezi River, offers a base to explore the Sapi Reserve, Mana Pools and the Zambezi River. With only 5 Explorers-style tents, each with en-suite shower and flush toilet, Sapi Explorers Camp offers a safari experience reminiscent of the old African explorers, the perfect combination of romance, adventure and discovery.

The focus of your stay is exploring one of Africa’s remote wilderness areas on foot and on wildlife-viewing drives as well as canoeing and boating on the Zambezi River. Traverse Sapi’s diverse terrain by vehicle or on foot, discovering the legendary Mtawatawa Pan, and encountering some of Africa’s largest wildlife species. Guests have the opportunity to experience up-close encounters with elephant, lion, leopard, hyena, wild dog, buffalo, eland, zebra and other ungulate species. This is also prime bird watching country and opportunities abound for guests to spot resident and migrant species especially in the early morning and late afternoons. Explore the Zambezi River by canoe and boat, watch as wildlife congregates along the river to drink and marvel at the setting of the African sun.

Guest accommodation consists of six luxury tented suites, each with its private plunge pool and all offering uninterrupted views over the mighty Zambezi to the escarpment beyond. Its sister camp, Nyamatusi Mahogany lies next door (half a mile away) and is the perfect luxury safari experience for families. It’s almost identical but has interjoining rooms and a dedicated children’s host and guides who offer children’s activities like bead-making and cultural games. Consisting of 2 tented suites and 2 family suites nested under ancient mahogany trees on the lush shores of the mighty Zambezi River, the camp has been designed with style and serenity in mind.

Great Plains Conservation Sapi Explorers Camp Room

Tent

5 Explorers-styled tents, each with en-suite bathroom facilities including bucket shower and flush toilet. This is the Africa of old! There are just five guest tents, and all are positioned amidst trees on the riverbank. Each is described as ‘explorers’ in style. Rigged up by sturdy poles, an exterior layer of canvas extends over the inner tent structure, creating a shady veranda where you can relax and enjoy your views! Entering the tent, you’ll find a double bed or twin beds, bedside tables and lighting, a writing desk and chair, a luggage rack, an explorer’s chest at the end of every bed, and additional storage furniture for your belongings. Persian-style floor rugs add a little comfort, a lot of colour, and a cool adventurous flair. The en-suite washroom contains a flush toilet, washbasin, and shower. It’s positioned to one side of the bedroom, through a roll-up canvas partition. The toilet sits discreetly behind a screen.

The communal lounge and dining areas at Sapi Explorers Camp occupy a classic mess tent. This is open sided, making for wide vistas over the Zambezi and cool breezes wafting through. In the lounge, wood-framed well-cushioned seating surrounds a coffee table, while the dining space contains one round table flanked by safari chairs – this is where guests eat together, tucking in to delicious hearty fare! The camp offers a good selection of drinks too, and an alternative dining venue in its riverside fire-pit. Set up close to the Zambezi, this is the perfect place for sharing safari stories while watching the sun rising or setting pink, purple, and gold over the water.
