African Bush Camps Somalisa Expeditions Lobby

Somalisa Expeditions exudes adventure and brings you face to face with Africa’s giants. Sit in your armchair and let nature venture to you. Somalisa Expeditions is a place of bonfires, where stories and laughter are shared and where the striking African sky evolves from a bright orange blaze, with silhouetted acacia trees on the horizon, to the twilight of the night sky. The camp captures the feel of the original safari adventurers and the first tented camps of the early 20 century for a unique and romantic safari experience. Various activities are offered, including guided hikes, pre-arranged village visits in a private vehicle.

Hwange’s famously populous elephants meander past Somalisa Expeditions at all hours of the day, drinking from the nearby waterholes and having mud baths in front of the raised deck where you are able to photograph and observe them in their natural habitat. Watch how the babies pick up speed the minute they scent the water, trotting along excitedly while the adults keep watch and bring up the rear (the adults also form a protective phalanx around the little ones as they drink, keeping them safe from lurking predators). Somalisa Expeditions consists of six Meru-style tents, each built on a wooden platform with en suite bathrooms and exceptional views of the Zimbabwean bush from their private verandas.

Spacious and beautifully furnished in contemporary African art and craft, each of the six Meru-style tents also has a large en suite bathroom made of wood with an outdoor shower and flushing toilet. The tent roof and high wooden walls around the bathroom ensures total privacy as you shower to the peaceful sounds of the wilderness all around you.

Dining

When we’ve stayed at Expeditions, the food has been excellent – light meals in the heat of the day and more substantial fare in the evenings. As always on safari it’s unlikely you’ll go hungry here. Breakfast is the usual buffet served before your early-morning activity. Lunch is a relatively flexible meal. After your siesta and before your afternoon activity, high tea – with sweet and savoury snacks. Dinner is a sit down, three-course meal, usually taken communally with guides and senior staff joining guests.

The main tented area at Somalisa Expeditions has both solar and generator power, with battery-charging facilities for all your devices. Flights can be arranged to the nearby Manga Airstrip.

African Bush Camps Somalisa Expeditions Pool

Pool

A small swimming pool brings welcome relief from the heat during the later months of the year, though you may have company: the pool is also favoured by the park’s famous herds of elephant, which much prefer the crystal clear water to that in the more natural waterhole in front of camp.
